Default Ram MDS engines giving serious trouble.

I have been told by a person that runs a garage that there have been several incidents of the Hemi MDS engines giving serious trouble such as injectors failing and causing, at least in some cases, piston meltdown. He claims that several people that work for dealers have told him this.

Frankly, I don't believe this to be true, but I would like to hear from other members out there on whether or not you have heard this. My 2011 recently started having a little trouble with the engine missing slightly at times when it gets in a pull and just before it shifts into a lower gear. This is a very intermittent problem and doesn't last but just a few seconds. When I told this person about this trouble, he advised me of the above.

Any thoughts about this? Has anyone experienced any serious trouble with their Hemi? Any suggestions as to what might be troubling my truck?

Well, since the incidence of issues with MDS or the Hemi engine in general has been almost non-existent here I'm thinking that person is not accurate in their statement. The 5.7L Hemi with MDS has been around since at LEAST 2004 (I had one in a 2005 Grand Cherokee purchased early in 2005). They have a long track record of working pretty well. The only issue I'd call slightly common around here is with exhaust manifold bolts breaking and causing ticking noises. Well, and also the horrible MPG... :-)

Never heard of any issues like that, and MDS has been around long enough that there are plenty of vehicles with 200K+ miles on them with no issues.

I've got 104K on my truck so far and don't even notice when it kicks in

He must be referring to the new Chevy/GMC MDS system.

Agreed 100%. I had my 06' MDS Ram for 7 years and traded it in with well over 150k and the engine never had an issue. My buddy bought his the same day i bought mine and still drives his about to turn 200k, no issues. I don't recall hearing about anyone having engine damage due to MDS issues.

Actually just called a buddy who spent 12 years as a mechanic at a Dodge/Chrysler dealer and he said he never came across any MDS equipped vehicle that suffered engine damage due to an MDS issue. He said the only MDS issues he dealt with and heard of were issues where the system stops working all together and the engine simply stays running on all cylinders as opposed to half. He said this was *******ly always caused by MDS solenoid issues caused by using the wrong type of oil, people not changing the oil often enough where you have sludge buildup or an electrical issue at the solenoids. Either at the connector or the solenoid coil simply failing. In any event it throws a CEL and the disables MDS. No damage, just worse MPG.

Chevy engines with MDS are having that problem in the Silverados and Sierra's. Just read and article on it. Premature engine wear, cylinder walls dry out and causing oil burning.. GM knows about this and will update (re-flash) so that the engine will go to 8 cylinder after a certain amount of time in 4 cylinder mode to lube the other 4 cylinders. hmmmm GM at it's best again...........

No issues with the Hemi MDS on the Ram that I am aware of either.

The Dodge Challengers a few years back had some issues with the timing chain that was thought to have been caused by the MDS, but I have never heard any definitive proof this was the cause. The chain in the Challengers was not as beefy as the Rams and I believe this was the main problem. There was a recall for the Challengers for this I believe.
