Eco boost update
"Im not knocking my ecoboost, I do think its a nice truck that tows well but I was blown away that towing my boat 150 miles I averaged 6MPG. By the time I got the boat home the fuel light was on. It seams other trucks I have owned did much better. The boat and trailer clock in at a bit over 9K. Anyone else tow a heavy boat like this with a gas engine and get similer MPG? Its not a huge deal seeing as I only tow the boat long distance a few times a year (its in a storage lot across the street from a boat ramp)."
Found on the Hull Truth boating forum this morning and thought it might interest the hemi owners here.

That's pretty typical from what I'm reading. MPG numbers get down around single digits after about 7500 lbs. or even 5000 lbs. if the terrain is pretty hilly.
I'm on a couple of diesel only forums which are non-brand specific so I get to read a lot of Ford F150 posters who have stepped up to Powerstrokes who complained their Eco Boost MPG drops like a rock when the engine is worked...

Uneven terrain like that, I would say that's about right. When I was tourney bass fishing, my '98 RSCB 4x4 5.9 Magnum gasser would go from about 14 mpg highway to about 10 just pulling 3000 lbs. of bass boat and gear...

2006 quad cab long bed 2500 ,5.7 hemi, 4.10 gearing, and 33 " tires
towing a 900 lb trailer and a 500 lb ATV on it, from PA to Ohio, 500 miles, up and down hills, a LOT of hills, running mostly at say 75 mph
I average 9 mpg!
enpty same run I will get about 11.5 mpg
been running this trip every yr for the past 15+ yrs, say 2-3 times a yr, every other trip with the same trailer and same ATV
have gone thru different 2500 ram trucks, yrs 1997(360)--1999(360)-2000(360)-2001-(360)2004 (hemi 5.7)-2006 (hemi 5.7)
all trucks had 4.10 gearing, and 33 inch tires
the older 360 V 8's got me on average of 12-14 empty and right on 9.5-10 mpg towing , again same trailer and load
all trucks were almost the same, MINUS the first couple were quad cab's, but not 4 full sized dodors, as they just didn't make em LOL
I have owned about 25+ 3/4 ton trucks with GAS V 8's, and they all get about teh same dam MPG doing like work, from the old 1960's jeep J 20's
to the 70's dodge 's(even a few powerwagons with 440's)
to the 80's 90's and now 2000's
as far as I am concerned they have not done much to really get better MPG's towing ibn a gas or small diesel motored truck
the biggest lack of performance gains in trucks today to ME< is transmissions
they all lack , they don't shift fast enough to stay in the HP /trque curve that moves a heavy truck/load!
in todays computer driven world
the trans to ME should be computer controled to match HP and torque needs
MY 5.7 will go from 75 mph,( about 2 k in rpms) drop down to about 62 mph before down shifting and them run up to about 5500 rpm's, and will by then have lost all its momentium and power, that 5500 rpms will never bring back
and that is were MPG's go down the drain
faster shfts befroe you loose all the momemtium and HP/torque
is what will be needed to get a fullsize truck to run better
till then, adding rear view camera's a dozen cup holder, heated steering wheels
will DO CRAP to make a truck work and tow!!
own a big truck, tow a heavy load, and you get porr MPG"S
till they get better trans IMO
