Belvidere works to supply big demand for Dodge Caliber

With gas prices at or approaching all-time highs in the United States, the Dodge Caliber is flying off dealer lots as customers clamor for the hot-selling hatchback. Through June, Chrysler sold 43,694 Caliber vehicles and dealers say they could sell more. Many have expanding waiting lists with names of interested Caliber buyers. Downtime, due to programming of body shop robots at the Belvidere (Ill.) Assembly Plant, has slowed production of the Caliber, which, in turn, slows shipments of the vehicle to dealers. Chrysler Group officials said some production issues are to be expected, given the plant's recent upgrade to become flexible and automated enough to build several different vehicles on the same line. "Right now we're in the middle of bringing on a third shift. We're in the middle of launching eight different configurations of products," Frank Ewasyshyn, Executive Vice President—Manufacturing, said in an interview. "The demand is unbelievable. We're pushing harder than ever before." (The Detroit News)

This is of little consolation to those who are/were tired of waiting, that's irreplaceable marketshare. Look at those on this forum, and I am sure this forums crossection is fractionally representative with regard to the general public. We are not only giving up sales but blowing a great opportunity to expand our customer base at the expense of other manufacturers.

Thats a good point, Motopimp. I also think its great that the Caliber is doing so well. There's legions of fans, people who can't wait to pimp out their Calibers.....I'm sure that DCX has taken notice and I, for one, would like to have more faith in them and know that they will get these Calibers pumped out of the factory. I'm sure they're not interested in loosing any new or potential customers.

I think it just takes a little more time with such a large operation to catch up and change plans around. DCX has the advantage of great american/german management and is therefore slightly more nimble to affect changes throughout their organization (in comparison to the remaining Big 2 American manufacturers, at least).

Keep the faith...we all know the Calibers are worth it!
