Default 02 Caravan Transmission

This van has been in the shop going on six weeks this time and it is still not fixed and I would love any input anyone has to offer me.

While driving down the road one day the trans started going into neutral and if you would let off the gas it would go back into gear. Took van to my mechanic 6 weeks ago and he said it needed a new transmission. Also, at that time I was having an issue with the wipers, radio, windows, ac/heat etc. periodically not working while the motor was running. I could turn the van on and off and all would usually start working after a few tries or it could be a few days before everything would start working while driving. But everything always worked when I just turned the key over but didn't actually start the van.

Anyway, my mechanic has since put in a transmission, BCM, TCM, and speed sensor.

The window/wiper etc. issue is resolved but the transmission is however stuck in 3rd gear while driving. I went over there earlier and pulled the following codes P1684 and P0601. Which the P0601 is Internal Computer Error, or the PCM.

Any advice on what to do next? Replace the PCM? and If I do that will it fix my transy issue?

My mechanic is pretty much like I have no clue what to do now and he said he was going to take it to another mechanic who used to work for the local dodge/chrysler dealership before they closed and see if he can figure out what it going on.

Guess I am just hoping someone has had similar issues and can help me.

im gessing that yall need a mech that knows wtf the is doing. them codes aint gonna help. a mech with a scanner that can read trans infor not pcm info will give them ansers yall need to fix her. it may be that the trans didnt need to get replaced. so many hacks just say it needs a trans but dont no how to fix the prob.

The wire harness could have a break at one of the sensors, Thats just a guess. The other would be, did you replace the TCM with an reman? What you should do is have a transmission tech from a dealer run some test, ck the CVI's and clutch test and a shift lever test too.

Sure is many things it 'could' be but without accurate information, it's all speculation. It sure rubs me the wrong way when people throw parts at a problem or don't use proper diagnostics at the problem. The hacks give up instead of taking on the challenge until it's properly resolved.

Update:

PCM has been replaced with a new one. Transy still stuck in 3rd gear. Has been checked for error codes and there are none. The speedometer is now stuck on 0 and the mileage is not changing. Also while driving all the P R N D 3 2 selections will have a box around them as if they are all in gear, then the next minute the D will have the square around it like it should...

Just wonder if anyone knows of a correlation between the speedometer / mileage and the transy? Any suggestions?

the pcm aint got nothing to do with the transy. and it aint stuck in 3rd, its in limpin stuck in 2nd speed stuck on zero could be output speed sensor but them other probs tell me you got a new tcm and someone didnt program in pinion factor. who put in the computer, whos' working on it, do they know wtf theys doing? my only suggestion is yall find a diff shop that can realy fix it. doing some math she's been down for 9+ weeks yall said in nov down for 6 weeks and now we are 3 weeks more. time to cut bait or find diff shop

Even if the PCM has nothing to do with the transy, it was still throwing up the code for it and even after clearing codes it came back. So yesterday he put the new PCM in and it didn't fix the transy issue but did get rid of that P0601 code. After replacing the PCM it did not have any other codes yesterday.

Let me back up a bit and say that not just this one mechanic has been working on it. He has actually taken it in to 3 other shops for advice / help and also to the dealer over this 9 week period. So it just hasn't had one set of eyes looking at it.

I actually drove it home yesterday so I could get a better idea of what it was doing now. And the only thing I really noticed last night was the speedometer was going back and forth from 0-120 then it would be on what your actual speed was, which I was going 30-35 at 3500rpm stuck in limp mode...

Then this morning I noticed the mileage was not changing and the speedometer was on 0 and after dropping DD off at school the engine light came on. I didn't think to check for codes until after posting earlier, because I had checked last night and there were none.

So I went and checked and pulled the following code P0500 which is speed sensor and the mechanic is going to replace again. As for the TCM the mechanic installed and towed it to the dealer to program. So if the "pinion factor" was not programmed to the TCM then the dealer did that... (going to have to look up "pinion factor")

Thanks for the help! ~ Val
