Brakes bad at 19,000 miles?
My mother drives a 2008 Grand Caravan SXT (leased.) 19,400 on the clock and she called me complaining of a loud growling/grinding noise from the front right. Pulled the wheel and the outside pad was completely gone and the rotor was scored beyond spec.
The inside pad and both pads on the front left still has a little material left, but they're definitely done.
Anyone know how long the warranty covers brakes, or if there's any TSB's/recalls for the front brakes? 19,000 miles seems quite premature to be doing this. Not to mention a new rotor was $70 bucks, and the pads were $50. Really sucks when this van is getting turned in as early as May.

It sounds like she was really riding them. I assume the rears are disc also in which case you may have a bad proportioning valve favoring the front. If the rears look like brand new thats what I would guess. Otherwise it looks like she is just really hard on them.
She is a little rough on brakes... I get quite a bit more life out of pads myself. And yes, they were pretty evenly worn. It was just that one bad that disintegrated completely.
I'm pretty sure the stock pads are organic. They don't last as long as metallic or semi-metallic but they stop good and are quiet. Should have lasted a bit more than 19k though. I see this a lot with rear drums. The rears go out of adjustment and the fronts take all the abuse. Since the rears aren't wearing out they never get serviced. With disks though the rears are always in perfect adjustment. If you mom is anything like my mom it makes sense. She is always riding the brakes.
heads up, chrysler know they have problem with the brake pads. They are working on replacement pads. But in the mean time, you may want to get aftermarket pads.

master tech. this is all dodge caravans having issues with brakes even 2010? hell im and wife usually aint rough on brakes but i be hating to have to be replacing brakes every 19k. my crv had 58km and they still were like over 3/4 left on pads.
also what pads do you recommend aftermarket, actually my wife worked at a brake manufactorer might just ask for a set. although i had hit and miss with them. had like 3 levels for my ranger. one stopped real good but real dusty. the other to hard compound squeels. and finally found to use the third. but was a trial and error type deal which i can't really do with this cause it was my second vehicle.

I installed Wearever Golds. They were $50 a set from Advance Auto. I've installed hundreds of sets of these pads and never had any out of the ordinary problems with them. They're a good, mid level pad.
I'm running Wagner Thermo Quiets on my Jeep. They chirp a little from time to time, but they work well and with 5,000 miles, they look brand new.
I also have good experience with NAPA and Monroe brand ceramic brakes pads. I recommend bedding them in with a new set of rotors, but they stop well and produce minimal brake dust.

If chrysler knows of a problem like this, will they cover under warranty? I have a 2008 grand caravan, 24k miles, pads 20% left.
