Welcome to DF
Unplug the solenoid pack connector and try to move the van in drive. If it does move, then you have an problem inside the transmission. Also remove the output sensor and inspect for metal on the sensor. That will also let you know if something came apart.

Couldn't he just remove the trans relay to kill electrical power to the trans instead of unplugging the solenoid pack?

Sure they could, But i think it would much easyier for the member to diagnose problem by unplugging the solenoid pack. And they can also see where the output and input sensors are.

I guess I just don't see how speed sensors and solenoid packs would cause the trans to lockup running or in gear. Seems that in the trans, there are blow up planets that are causing the problem I'm thinking that with the engine off, the vehicle can roll, but running, teh LR clutch is applied in park, neutral, reverse, 1st and if somthing else is bound up, then the results would be like having a trans brake. Maybe drop the pan looking for large chunks of metal would be in order.

Look at this way, You know there is a holding clutch and there is a clutch/hub that needs to rotate. But if both the holding clutch and turning hub are being held the van/car won't move. By unplugging the solenoid pack, it is releasing hydraulic from the solenoid pack and letting the transmission to move in 2nd gear. Everyone knows as limp in or fail safe. The speed sensors as you know also have a maganet at the end of the sensor. If the ck engine lite came on because of a output code, chances are is either metal at the end of the sensor. I am trying to make it easy to diagnose the problem. There is a 99% chance the transmission will need an overhaul or replace.

Does the van roll in park? If it doesn't the axle are not the problem.

Does it just lockup when rolling without the engine running and not in park? Or does it make any bad noises when moving in any fashion?
