It's has all gone away! The trans shifts smooth and quiet, just like one would think it should, in all modes. I'm a happy camper now.

The Service Write-up reads thus:

Check for intermittent clunk on trans engagement
Scan for codes, no codes related to trans operation
Performed quick learn to trans controller
Road tested and shifts better now

So if you are having a similar problem, get then to do the "Quick Learn to Trans Controller" - I have no idea what this is/does but who cares,it worked for me!
So I now drive around using the "Econ" mode all the time. I know that the most valuable way to save gas is to go lightly on the gas pedal, but the (claimed) 4-5% savings using the Econ mode helps, too!
This is great info!

I am taking mine in again tomorrow. I have the same issue with the loud clunk after driving for a while, stopping somewhere and then when I leave and I put it into reverse or drive I get a loud clunk. They did a re-learn on the transmission in the spring but the issue is still there.

Have they made any progress in the shifting while in ECON mode. My dealership told me just not to use ECON mode as they all shift poorly when in ECON mode.

Thanks.

Thumbs down

I am still having the same problems. They also told me not to drive in the Economy mode. Hesitating, shuddering, clunking and banging and the best is starting out on an incline and trying to move quickly, and the responce is a shudder in the tranny. I am driving it in the Economy mode, it gets 1 mile a gallon better fuel economy. I am just waiting for the tranny to drop from the rear. I will never buy another one again. This is my 9th Caravan and by far the worst!

Your complaints and frustrations are valid, and like you, I've lived through some annoying issues with my Caravan products since my first in 1998. However, aside from the "whistling windshield", and then the 2008 3.3L Grand "Gutless" Caravan I just got rid of, The 2011 I inherited is still a favorite, based on the Pentastar engine.

All vans were/are corporate vehicles that are fully supported by our company, so it's not "out of wallet" expense. But being a car-guy since young, I do try to stay objective. This tranny issue is something that reminds me every day that I've got to get into a dealer for that "quick learn." But I'm not hopeful that it will stop the issue. If it does, great. If not, I'll keep thanking Chrysler-Dodge for not allowing a pairing of their smallest engine..... hopefully ever again.... with a vehicle as large as the Grand Caravan/T&C. I just think the Caravan is, for it's price and available features, a great value. The big selling point for me? These vans go from people hauling to accomodating a full 8ft x 4ft sheet of plywood.

Well, I had it in to the dealership Friday. I told them that I still having issues with it clunking into drive especially when it is warm and I only stopped somewhere for a few minutes.

I was shocked when my work order came back that they found nothing and "The transmission is working normally".

Although the service advisor did say that they know it is an issue and they get one in almost everyday he said because there is no fix for it that they have to say it is working normally.

I will be opening a case with Chrysler HQ and encourage everyone else with this issue to do the same. More complaints, the faster the resolution.

I am worried what damage I am doing when it clucks hard into gear.

I would of stated that they wrote down the correct issue if they knew it was happening. cause chrysler probably has records to state how many have had issues. like this it probably slides thru there system. unfortunitely the truth is chrysler or even any other manufactor wount correct it unless recalled...

Since I am farther along with the transmission problem then most with this thread, I will tell you my 2011 GC has 23,000 miles on it and the tranny is getting worse. Everytime I bring it into Dodge they say nothing is wrong and add more Tranny fluid? It's not leaking on the ground so where is this fluid going? How about burning it up. I am scheduled to bring it back for an oil change and we will see how much fluid it's gone through since the last visit. I have no way of checking, there is no tranny dip stick, unlike the engineers who designed this transmission. Good Luck dealing with Dodge. I tryed and all I got was an extended warranty with $100 deductible and $30 a day towards a rental. That really solves my problem. I can't believe we are the only ones with this problem.

We are definitely not the only ones with this issue. As I stated in a previous thread, the dealership says they see this almost everyday. I encourage everyone to open a case with Chrysler and perhaps if enough of complain then something will be done.

My 2011 GC R/T is doing the same clunk when in Econ. No way this should be acceptable even if they say it's "normal".
It's a bad design or poor transmission shift point programming.
I'll be complaining next visit to the dealer.
