can you just rewire a standard speaker to work with Infinity?

I have replaced various speakers on my 97 GC with OEM Infinity from EBAY. They don't last or they cut in/out etc.

 

yes. Infinity speakers are just self amplified. Pin 1 is ground for the amp, pin 2 is the speaker -, pin 3 is the speaker + and pin 4 is 12v for the amp. Just connect a regular speaker and use pins 2 and 3.

 

I can probably test with a spare speaker for output. Without the amp would the output be crappy? I will find out......

 

I've done it before and it was better sound. My wife had a Daytona with infinity speakers that crapped out. Put some nice JVC speakers in the back and in the doors and it worked great.

 

I've gone to the crutchfield.com site and found excellent speakers. Got Sony for my Intrepid. You can replace them yourself. I got a new radio through them as well. Good price, excellent advice. If you can't replace the radio yourself, Best Buy does it for about $55.00. Crutchfield will include all the needed wiring by the way.

 

I think the 90's infinity speakers had 4 wire amps and 00's had non amplified 2 wire speaker.

I cut the 2 wires to the "blown" infinity speaker itself ( blue and white ). and then crimped on insulated female blades. Then I plugged it into the connector on the speaker X and - and it works!!. It's missing a little of the amplified thump but good enough for me. now I have all 6 speakers working plus the 2 little tweeters way in the back.

The 5x7 door speakers seem to be the most troublesome for me, never had a problem with the rear 6x9's. I also had to replace a round dash speaker awhile back.

 

I am replacing all 6 speakers in my 2000 GC. I was wondering what those big black things that were attached to the speakers were, amps, I guess. so I guess to make the replacement speakers work, just cut the plastic connector off the use the blue and white wire to connect to the new speakers. Is this right? Thanks.


I believe I have 4 wires to each speaker.

yes they are amps. If you are going to do that you should replace the radio with one that has some amps

 

Just to update, there are 6 wires to the rear speakers, 2 for the speakers, 2 for the tweeters near the rear door, and 2 for, I am guessing the original amps.
