1996 1/2 was the last year for the safety neutral switch. Its now called a TRS (Transmission Range Switch) What type of problem are you having? To replace the TRS the valve body needs to be removed to replace the switch.

The reveser lights were staying on for about 3 month, just uplug them, i ask around about my problem with that, and friends told me that i needed sooner or later to replace the neutral safety switch because it was going to go bad. So now 3 months later it acting up , heres the problem the gear leaver sometimes lites up ,and other days it dont meaning the PRND321 lites up, but the lighted circle jumps from R to D and wont go to N mark or P mark so I can start the van ,so within the last week or so it will not start because the lite that circles each gear (P R N D321) when I turn the key to start the engine is on the R mark but the vans in P not Lighting up . So I check the gear sifter it ok , but I still remove it to check the placement was correct it was. So if I turn the key to start the van I have to move the gear sifter back and forth it get it to start from P to N it start like that for about a week now it not turning over at all,the starter is ok, it in the R mode and cant get it out from that mode to turn over. I tried to dicounet the battery and let it sit for about 30mins. so the computer can reset, but that will not work no more. So I know its this switch everyone is telling me. So how to I go about fixing this ? Do I need to remove the trans. pan from under the van to get to this TRS switch? Is it easy to do? Just tell me what I need to do , and I will do it......I dont have the money right now to take it the a repair shop. I allways try to fix my problem with my veicle myself first...SO ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY NICE....
Yes the pan needs to be removed. But I would try an ignition switch first, for the squires lighting up. Also look under the battery and find two connectors, inspect them and clean them if needed.
Ok , I will try a ignition switch first, so what you are tell me to remove the battery from the van and look under the battery tray? also the ingnition switch if I go to replace that will that inturn set my airbag off , or just pull the fuses on the fuse box. If that dont fix the problem , remove that tran. pan and what else do I have to do? will I see this TRS switch in there to replace it , or do I have to remove the tire and the trans. axle ,and take the tran. off from the engine to get to it. thanks for your reply.
When u talk about removing the valve body are u talking about from the engine or is there a part in the trans. U are talking about.

valve body inside trans, follow master tech instruction prior to doing this. Check connections under battery tray, they are known to corrode and cause this. If you decide to replace switch here are the instructions good luck.

Thanks, I will be looking at the two wires first then if there ok start only then to remove the trans pan again thanks for your quiet reply so I can look at this problem this weekend or just going to wait for the tropical depression to pass in south fla .
ok, I have a other questions got the fluids drain and the fliter off, now I think I removed about 12 srews on the valve cover but how do you get the shife rod to come thru the trans. block ? tap on it with srewdriver or what do I did to do ? there is a cap on the top of the shift rod with a nut there do I need to remove those also, or just tap it thru the trans.? Do I just need to pull on the valve cover on the bottom and it will come off. I dont want to damage anything so I will wait for anyones reply. Thanks
