Default Change oil every 10,000 miles?

Hi all,

When I bought my new G.C. the dealership gave me the "free oil changes for a year" and some other "free" (supposedly) stuff.

Anyways, the first time I brought the van in it had about 6,000 miles because I waited until the idiot message popped up on the dash. I decided to start taking in the van around 5,000 miles because I didn't fully trust the little message.

However, the second time I brought in the van the dealership told me they would NOT do the free oil change because last time they used a "semi-synthetic" oil that lasted for 10,000 miles...and do NOT come back until I'm @ 10k.

Is the dealership just jerking me around because they do not want to provide the free oil changes? I really don't feel comfortable waiting 10,000 miles...and in fact, that sounds completely absurd, IMO.

Is there a way for them to disable the little oil change message? It hasn't come up yet.

Thanks!

I've read many are comfortable going 10K on a full synthetic oil. I go 8K myself. 10K on a semi synthetic is pushing it IMHO.

I see from another of your posts that you have a 2014 van, here's what the manual says:

Your vehicle is equipped with an automatic oil change indicator system. The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance.

Based on engine operation conditions, the oil change indicator message will illuminate. This means that service is required for your vehicle. Operating conditions such as frequent short-trips, trailer tow, extremely hot or cold ambient temperatures, and E85 fuel usage will influence when the "Oil Change Required" message is displayed. Severe Operating Conditions can cause the change oil message to illuminate as early as 3,500 miles (5,600 km) since last reset. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 500 miles (805 km).

Your authorized dealer will reset the oil change indicator message after completing the scheduled oil change. If a scheduled oil change is performed by someone other than your authorized dealer, the message can be reset by referring to the steps described under "Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)/Oil Change Required" in "Understanding Your Instrument Panel" for further information. NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or twelve months, whichever comes first.

Severe Duty All Models Change Engine Oil at 4000 miles (6,500 km) if the vehicle is operated in a dusty and off road environment. This type of vehicle use is considered Severe Duty
So as long as the oil change indicator doesn't light up, and you are not considered "Severe Duty", then the 10,000 mile interval is acceptable.

Note the 10,000 mile interval is for conventional oil, not synthetic. The manuals says the following about synthetic oil:
Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recommended oil quality requirements are met, and the recommended maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed.
It is rumored that most if not all 5W-20 oils are semi-synthetic, so that may be the reason for the 10,000 mile interval.

George

post that to the dealer. they just want to maximize there end to not give you required oil changes. not there engine they ruin. to them they just have u back on engine repairs. I follow the standards and tell them I no where change my oils in other vehicles more than 5000km/3500miles so why should I get this one.

Post what to the dealer, that the manual says change the oil at 10,000 miles or when the change oil indicator comes on?

georgef sorry meant him to post that what in the manual itself not to exceed 10,000miles. I think even 7000miles is pushing it myself.

I would send Dodgecares a message about this, Maybe he can enlighten all of us. I also believe oil and filter should be change at 3,000 to 4,000 miles and tire rotation every other oil change.

Yeah, I'm just going to call the dealership and schedule one anyways....if they say no, I'll take it somewhere else.

Thanks for the replies.

We had a fleet company with 3.6L vans. 2012 I think. They ran 6,000-7,000 between oil changes and racked up 200,000 miles on them.

No freakin' way I would go 10K between oil changes.

10k is absurd. Personal use with full syn, I'll go 5k. Semi and conventional I stick with 3k. My stratus used to get full syn every 3k and the oil was looking and smelling pretty shabby. From experience I don't trust the higher mileage claims from oils.

Downside if the manual says every 10k, there's probably not much you can do as they're going by the book.
