Default 4x4 4.7 gas sucker

I have a 4x4 Club Cab 4x4 with a 4.7 and it just rapes me on the gas at about 13.5mpg 50% hwy 50% in town. I put it some Bosh Platinum 2 point plugs and have tried all octanes of gas. I am thinking about a K&N but I am not sure if it will help much, and I don't want to waste the money buying one to try out. Does anyone have any experience with my truck setup and adding a K&N intake? Or any other ideas as to why my gas mileage sucks?

well since I have put the plugs in, my gas mileage has gotten a little better, but it definately hasn't gotten worse. Plus its kind of hard to just toss out nearly $50 in plugs...

I just recently switched all fluids to amsoil.
I have tracked my gas usage since January and the mileage you are getting is not bad, remember you have a 4x4 and mileage is going to be worse than a 2WD.

I changed my plugs in my 03 QC 4x4 4.7 to the autolite copper plugs and my mileage has jumped from about 16 mpg to 17.25 mpg. Granted the champion plugs I pulled out were in pretty bad shape. I bought the truck a few months ago and it has about 72,000 miles on it. So far I am pleased with the mileage I am getting. It is about 70% highway, 25% in town and 5% playing with the tires grip or lack there of. Can't beat $13 and about 45 minutes of time for that kind of increase.Good luck.

Yeah I got a pretty good deal on this truck. It is in great shape. I had a 2002 4x2 quad cab with the 5.9 and put about 20,000 trouble free miles on it. Hopefully I have good luck with this one. There is a bit of a clunk from time to time shifting gears which concerns me a little. There doesn't seem to be a common pattern to it though. Might just be it is starting to downshift the same time I give it some gas. I think I will change the tranny fluid and filter and see what happens. Probably time to change the diff fluids out too.
