The 85's had a garret turbo, not sure which one, but its a little bit laggy at times. The horsepower is somewhere around 160's -170's depending upon if it is intercooled and automatic or what, I changed my factory CPU to a Mopar performance one and I push 17 lbs of boost out of my vnt garret, a K&N is always a good idea, if your sure there are no oil leaks ,synthetic oil is a good start, however if you want a good way to find an oil leak, synthetic oil is the way to go, Hope this helps.

From 1984 thru 1987 Chrysler used a Garrett turbo on all 2.2's. Starting in 1988 the "new" blow thru design 2.2 & 2.5 turbo I models got a Mitsu. made turbo (TOE4). After 1987 the only models that got the Garrett's where the TII, TIII, and TIV with an intercooler (i.e. Shelby Z, Shadow & Daytona VNT, Spirit & Daytona R/T, and anything offered by Shelby except the 1988 CSX-T which got the Mitsu Turbo)

The Mitsu turbo is a good solid unit and spools up allot faster than the Garrett because of its smaller size, but it has problems with spiking at high boost settings. The Garrett is a proven unit and holds steady boost even upwards of 20+ lbs. The Garrett is the best of the 2, but it all depends upon how much boost you are planning on running. If stock boost with a fast spool-up gets your rocks off, a Mitsu maybe the way to go. But if you need a bigger kick in the rear, then the Garrett may be what you want to reach for.

Only a non-intercooled turbo was available for '85 and they have failure issues because they run hotter not being intercooled. Just remember to let it idle to cool down before shutting it off and you'll be fine. Here are your 2.2L Turbo I specs:

Horsepower: 146 @ 5,200 RPM
Torque: 168 @ 3,600 RPM

Never heard of any failure issues with the 85's. The are all Garrett T3 turbo's with the exception of the Mitsu. Even the TII turbo's use the same turbine housing, but a slightly different compressor housing for the intercooling hose's. Intercooling does not affect the operating temp of the unit. It only cools the forced air before it reaches the intake.

Yes, but being part of the turbocharger it also helps to cool it down much like a heat sink.[sm=smiley2.gif]

I had turbo Dodges back when everyone was too scared to own them and that they only lasted up 50k, but I knew better.[sm=lol.gif] I've had these types of cars since I was 16 (32 now). So if I don't know by now I probably never will.

Yea, I'm on TD.com. (turbojerk)
I hang out there allot it seems.
