oil for my hemi
Well, the dealer suggested 5000mi with Mobil1 but besides lubrication oil and the filter also collects & flushes garbage out of the engine so I'm skeptical about the new marketing strategy of saying the oil lasts longer (to offset the bite of the extra costs I guess).
I still change oil & filter every 3000-3500 mi.

On my 3rd oil change 6,000 miles, I switched to Castrol Syntec. Its worked fine for me for 20 years. With synthetic I usually change it every spring, or 7500 miles whichever comes first. Same goes for my vette. Every engine Ive used it in is spotlessly clean internally, and never had a problem...even turboed cars.
Hello.. new to the forum... been lurking & reading for awhile... figured I'd jump in on this topic.
The Mopar oil the dodge spec calls for is an API "SL" rated oil.... or at least.. the Mopar 5W-20 oil for sale at the dealership is an API "SL" oil... and so any SL or SM (a few brands do have an SM rated oil out now... Valvoline.. Mobile 1 & Mobile "clean" 5000 to name a few..) rated oil would be fine for your engine.
I've used them both.... mobile 1 and amsoil... and more than anything, it depends on your driving habits.. your local environment / conditions...ect... as to how they perform, and how long you can take them out before changing. Like a previous poster mentioned... the oil may be good for 10,000+ miles... but the filter will still require changing, with the oil level topped off, on a regular basis. It really depends on the habits of the driver...
It's sometimes funny how we (myself included) will get all "mystical" when it comes to our oil..... and how much the advertising has really sunk into the buying public when it comes to oils & brands.
If you change your oil every 3,000 miles... then there is really not much of a benefit in running synthetic oil. regular API rated SL/SM "dino" oil will do just fine... honestly.
If regular $1.99 Mobile oil is rated "SM".... and $5.49 Mobile 1 synthetic is rated "SM".... then the main benefit from using the more expensive synthetic oil is the drain interval being longer.... as the level of protection is the same. They both meet the API specs for the "SM" rating.
Last time I looked at the amsoil... it was rated "SL"... as was Royal Purple. If you do choose to run a more expensive synthetic oil.. and extend your drain interval... be sure to spend some $$ on a GOOD oil filter designed for a longer drain interval.
As for drain intervals.. this is nothing new.. its been the spec for many european cars for years.. and even American automakers sell cars today with specs for longer than 3,000 mile drain intervals.

Just remember the max oil change interval on the Hemi is 6k miles. Something to think about if you want to keep the engine under warranty.
I'm also running Mobil 1 5w-20.

At 7,000 miles I switched over to a synthetic motor oil, any name brand will do. I use Mobil 1 5W20 and a good oil filter. I used to change oil at evry 3 months or 3,000 miles with regular oil, to help defry the extra cost of the synthetic, I now do it every 4 months.
I only put on about 10,000 miles a year, so no worry there.
As DodgeMech suggested, you may want to use a new oil drain plug at every oil change or every oher oil change - so as not to screw up the oil pan which costs $$$$$$$$$.
The seal is built into the drain plug, do not over tighten.

Good info...
Just remember.... Drain interval for your specific vehicle will have more to do with how the car is getting used. If you are stuck in stop & go traffic 5 days a week... with lots of idling.... or you live in dusty conditions.. it may be a good idea to change the oil more often than 3,000 miles.
The drain intervals are arbitrary numbers.. meant to be a good basic rule of thumb. For some.. a longer interval between oil changes will make sense. For others, especially city dwellers stuck in traffic jams daily... synthetic oils... or regular oils with shorter drain intervals will be the way to go.
