Default Question about exhaust/muffler??

hey guys
i was curious in putting in a flowmaster 40 series in my mag. do i have to change the whole system from the cat back or can i just replace the muffler and get the same. how does changing all the piping from the cat back differ from just changing muffler and removing resonator?

I just added the super 40 series to my R/T and all I did was change the mufflers. SHE SOUNDS AND PREFORMS GREAT! I explained to a flowmaster tech that I didnt want it to be to loud inside the car and i was thinking of just getting the mufflers and he said go for it. The stock resonator will help muffle the sound but it will still sound great and he was right!

you can change just the muffler and try to save money.....but if you want full potential i would look into getting a cat back system....

Borla has a Full Catback for the SRT-8 coming out in about three weeks. 1300.00 from the factory and claims to be an easy install as long as you can get under the car to remove the existing system.

I cant wait for this system. Its already fast enough but this should and another skipped heart beat when i drop it down....

part number is the 140..... 35 is the last two digits

I am hearing from all the guys in Southern California that a Zoomers Cat Back Exhaust is the way to go. Even the SRT-8 guys with the Borla Systems are scraping the exhaust and installing the Zoomers. Personally, I prefer the stock exhaust. I hear there is no Performance gains, at least that won't be automatically retarded by the computer... There are, however, reports that the exhaust will improve gas mileage, that is the only plus I have seen.

On a positive note:
I believe the guys testing the exhausts have fixed all of the 'drone' issues. Flowmaster had serious 'drone' issues at first. I went for a test drive in an RT with an exhaust system... All the while the sales guy was telling me how bitchen it was, and how awesome it sounded, I couldn't help thinking, "Geeze, my car is WAY quicker than this, AND quieter..." Glad I tried it before I ruined my car!

How much change in sound (or mileage...) would there be if I removed the resonators and simply installed straight pipe where the resonators were? Has anyone tried this?

I believe it is the Resonators you need to keep installed in order not to have an interior drone... You can change the rest, but keep the resonators, or some other form of resonator. There are numerous posts on the previous pages. Seek and ye shall find...

I took a diffeent approach. I went to a shop and had the one-piece muffler removed and replaced by two straight pipes. I left the resonators whre they are.
The sound is noticeably deeper outside of the car. Inside, there is a low growl--no drone, and the sound is not even enough to make me have to turn up the volume on the stereo. Just a nice low growl. Interestingly, when I get to a higher gear or while cruising on the interstate (in higher gear), there is almost no difference in the sound inside the car.
I kept the muffler(s) in case I didn't like the sound--it would be a easy (and cheap) reinstall. However, after about two weeks, I am still happy with it.
The whole thing, tax included, cost me $73. If I had a welder, I could have accomplished it myself in about 30 minutes.
I'll see if I can post some photos and a sound clip later on. I didn't have much luck posting photos previously, but I'll work on it.

Oh, performance: Maybe it's just me, but there does seem to be a bit more power when I "get on it." One slight downside: the transmission seems to want to shift into a higher gear at a slightly lower RPM than before when driving normally. There is no difference in the shifting when I drive more aggressively--except the Magnum sounds a bit meaner.
