I am looking at buying this 1995 Neon Sport, and the owner says when he test drove it, and went on the gas a bit it would sporadically shift from Drive to neutral.

It's an automatic.

Anyone know what the problem could be?

 

Could be the kickdown cable on the transmission. It could be stuck.

Did he tell you if the gear shift itself moevs on it's own? When exactly does it do it, under heavy load or just randomly?

I've seen this before, it's susually th ekickdown cable ont he tranny itself sticks. Try cleaning it and greasing it with something. That should correct the problem.

 

It happens under heavy load, when you start traveling at a higher speed.


The actual gear shifter moves on it's own to N.


Where can I find this cable, how do I get to it and so on. I am getting the car for only $1000, and seems like a good deal if this is a easy fix.

No, it does sound like the kickdown cable is stuck. Take it apart and clean it.

 

its near the throttle cable and goes down to the trans I believe.

I've already shown him pics of it. Though. Hopefully he gets it fixed with no issues.
