Default Proper gooseneck location?

I just had a B&W turnover ball gooseneck hitch installed in my '07 2500 Quad cab short box. I got looking at it after I got home and it sure seems far forward in the bed. Where is the optimal location that the ball should be? I would have assumed it was suppose to be right over the rear axle. This one has it about 3-4 inches forward from the axle, is that right?

I had one installed and it was about 1" front from center of the axle. 3-4" maybe a little forward but really should be too bad..

I have the same setup on my 06. It sits a few inches fwd of the axle. The way the kit is made I dont think you can screw it up. Anyway I did some test with my horse trailer after the install and I would have to be in a real hard turn to smack the cab. I guess it just depands on how your trailer is made in the front. If it is really wide be carefull. My advise is just test it out somewhere out in the open so you know how close you are at what turn angle.

Thanks for the replies. We'll see how it goes this weekend, pulling a horse trailer to a field trial. gjenninngs, is that you from the gundog forum? If so, small virtual world eh?

Anywho, that's a good idea to go make a few hard turns as that was my concern... putting the trailer right through the rear window, ouch

it should be darn close to the axle center as mentioned afore. you should access your pull pin from the wheel well.

According to the installation instructions, it should be placed 45 1/2 inches from the back of the bed on a short bed truck and 47 1/2 inches on the long bed.

Every one I have ever seen was 2-4 inches forward of the rear axle. Mine is about 2 inches forward and it pulls my Sundowner 8010 just fine.

I checked with B&W, it is indeed the right hitch and it's installed exactly where it should be. I just pulled a horse trailer with living quarters all weekend and it did just fine. I have to say, this is my first full size truck ever, let alone a diesel... man 'o man, that thing is awesome. It pulled the fully loaded trailer plus two horses up somemajorly steep hills without breaking a sweat. I sorta forgot it was back there at times. I love my truck!
