Here are pictures of the silencer ring alone and in the turbo. The ring is on the intake side of the turbo and should be visible with the intake pipe off.

Yessir, they are there to keep stuff quiet. Rude, obnoxious people like myself actually ENJOY the sound of a diesel engine. That crap also restricts the flow of air and exhaust, which means that bad boy can't breathe as well as it should. I've never seen baffles or silencer rings on a Peterbilt.

The first mods I did were to get rid of that stuff. IMHO, i'd rather have a cummins that breathes freely before I chip it or modify the engine itself.

Lastly, as a warning to other cummins owners: Wife's car is in the shop for a week, so we are "sharing" my truck. Got in it to come to work today, found a bottle of Evan's Sour Mash and a note that said the truck is her's, take a drink and get over it.[&o]. Don't let wife or girlfriend drive the truck for more than a few hours. And I even bought the 6 speed!!! Thought she'd hate it. Luckily, I think she was kidding. May have to trade the car off on an older entry level truck, like a FORD. Let her practice first.

Yup, performance was sacrificed to satisfy the mom and pop buyers on the dealership lot buying new trucks. Thats exactly what an ole' timer said to me before I bought mine. He said," this truck is so quiet you can't tell its a diesel rolling down the interstate". I'm sure he didn't care about upping the performance ante'.
I replaced my intake with the AFE stage II ( which totally replaces the stock filter AND tube to the turbo ) and she whistles almost like a 18 wheeler. Took some time to get used to, but I'm fine with it now.
Good luck with your decisions !!
