I am not sure if the 5.9 has an oil spray hole in the top of the rod for cooling the piston like the big cumalogs do, if it does when you build your new motor you mught want to open those holes to spray more oil and cool the pistons more.

You can't get a running engine because of the emissions crap, but you can still get a long block.
Yeah, I wasn't looking to get a running engine. A long block would be just the ticket. The problem is getting it. It can only be done through the dealer and the couple I've spoken with acted like I was asking them something in Chinese. I guess it's not everyday someone calls the parts dept. and asks for a price on a new motor.

Finally got one that understood me and got a fairly decent price. I plan to pull the head tomorrow so, I'll know for sure whether i need to call that dealer back.

Triton. . .it may be a long shot, and I dont know how much info you'll get out of him. . .but call Jeff Garmon. he's been able to get his hands on long blocks in the past. maybe out of old junkers, but it would be a shot to see if you could get one.

I think your best bet is to find one out of a wrecked truck. then build it the way you want. have you priced out any of the parts yet? heads, pistons, rods etc...

Hey Triton,
this may be a long shot, but have you tried getting a hold of Cummins direct?? Cummins headquarters is about an hour north of me...this is also where they make the engines. Maybe you just tell them the truth and ask if there is anyway you can buy an engine without going through Chrysler, or they may even have other suggestions. They have a reputation around southern Indiana, as being a stand up business.

Nick....
Yes, I got your call. What can I say but.... you da man ! Thank you very much for looking into that. I will call Monday and talk with him. I'm gonna be working on getting the head off tomorrow and will know for sure.

BigMike.... Thanks goes to you also for the info you gave me. I called them today but, sat on hold for tooo long. I'll call again.

To everyone.... you guys are too cool. I really appreciate your suggestions, comments and support. I will post as much of a play by play that I can. It's unfortunate that it's my truck but, I think it will help those that don't know, learn what goes on in our motors. Plus... you know damn well it's always cool to see pictures like that when it's not yours [:@]

Like I said, you outta have some pretty cool trophys for the wall of shame after all this is over. It would be fun to build up a hotrod motor. You'll definatly get to know the inside of these things. Have fun! and learn a lot.

at least a piston or a valve :-) the block won't really match the decor ;-)

I'm on the way to being more of a diesel mechanic than I thought I would. Bolt on stuff is easy... engine innerds is challenging and I'm having fun digging around. It's broke but... it CAN be fixed.
