vp44 replaced, now what?
Hello,
I found this great site about 2 weeks ago when my vp44 and lift pump died on my 2001 2500 cummins. Ordered new vp44 and lift pump from blue chip, installation went well, bled the lines, etc. Now it just cranks and cranks, no fire. I checked diagnostic code, and got P1693, "Turbo charge control curcuit malfunction". Would this prevent the engine from firing, or did I maybe not bleed the lines enough, or could it be something else?
Thanks in advance.

well how did u bleed the lines everytime ive had to bleed the lines on my truck. ive lossend numbers 1 and 3 and bleed them only. just cuz it will run on 2 cylinders ( very very poorly) enough to self bleed the other 4. also did u have full squirts of fuel coming out or did it still have air in it and are u sure that all the electrcal conections got hooked up. the code shouldnt do that if u have fuel and its cranking it will fire. my guess is u dont have it bleed enough and u missed a conection mabe a map sensor or somthing like that.
Maybe I didnt bleed them enough. I had all 6 loose, and bumped the starter to get the lift pump going. After a few times, I noticed fuel leaking out of #6, so I tightened that one and moved on. Next was #1. I got fuel out of each line before I tightened them, but each time it was only a few drip of fuel, it wasnt pouring out or anything. How much of a flow would I be getting by bleeding them off the lift pump only?
Thanks BFR for your reply.

You won't get any by just bumping the engine over, you'll have to crank on it real good. The lift pump will prime up to the vp44 then the vp44 has to prime itself and then the fuel injector lines.
Mayfair: Its a Carter pump, its what Chip from Blue Chip recommended. He said its an upgrade from what was on there originally, even though its a stock part.
I will work on re-bleeding it tonight when I get home from work. I figured that by just bumping the starter and activating the lift pump, Id get a little flow to get most of the air out of the lines, then crank it over to get some fuel delivered by the injection pump. Maybe what I was getting was just some left over fuel that was in the lines. I took my fuel filter out last night to see if the lift pump was filling up my fuel filter bowl, and it was. I didnt try using the schrader valves, but will do that tonight also. Thanks to all for your assistance.

a line wrench is all you need. . .once you get the air out of #1, go to #2. once you have raw fuel squirting out of atleast 3 cylinders it will run on it's own. do the other 3 while the engine is running and you'll be good.
On recommendation from Chip, its mounted in the stock spot. He told me that going to an in tank pump was not neccessary, and that the lift pump he was sending me was an upgrade even though it was a stock pump, and I shouldnt have any problems. I did get his fuel pressure warning light too, so that should help.
