im thinkin about buyin a used 2000 to 2002 2500 cummins diesel truck...most of the trucks im lookin at have 150K or better miles on them. anything i need to watch out for? what are some possible things that would already be wrong or about to go wrong on these trucks?

 

watch out for the lift pump. the easiest way is to cycle the key on/off without starting the truck, on the third on cycle leave th e key on and watch the odometer for code. if there are no codes it will say p done. theres a list of codes here just do a search for p codes. if you find a truck to purchase, the first thing your gonna wanna do is get a fuel pressure guage on it. low fuel pressures take out the expensive injection pump (vp44) on thses year of trucks. 99-02.

 

I don't think the code cycling thing works on 2nd gens

 

yeah ive gotten codes off of my 2001 gasser like that with the key cycling...should be the same for a diesel.

 

the key trick works on 01 and up trucks. . .I think. on the 3rd gens you can get the hour meter as well. . .on 2nd gens you have to hook the computer up to an OBD scanner.

 

my 02 will do it with the key cycle. Also ceck for the 53 block. Theres a thread in the faq/diy up at the top.

 

sweet, thanks. what about ball joints? ive heard a bit about those going bad, but at what mileage do they normally peter out?

 

it worked on my truck, and it showed all dash's.... i supose that would mean a good day!

 

yea. . .if theres nothing to report it will just show all dashes and then it will say 'done'
