Default Towing Question

So here is the question for those of you who are in the know. I have a 2006 2500 megacab. I'll be towing a 12K pull trailer from OR to MN. I have to go over some passes through ID and MT. What's the best way to tow over these passes and in general. In the tow/haul mode or the overdrive off mode. I got in a debate with a guy at work and now I have doubt about what mode to tow in. Thanks for any information.

I would say put it in tow/haul mode since that is what that mode was designed for.

If it feels like it's hunting for gears, turn it off, otherwise, leave it on. That's how I tow with mine, however keep in mind mine's a 98.

I tow about 8K around Utah/Colo./Nev. and that's what I do. I'm headed for the MoparNats on Monday so I'll see what it does out in the flats

This would be my thinking as well, when it's hunting for gears is when you could do damage as gear hunting will heat up your tranny fast.

I won't comment on the t/h mode, but I have a question about the trailer. Am I reading you right that the trailer is a regular "bumper pull" type and not a goose neck or fifth wheel? If so check out the towing capacity of your truck on the Dodge web site. If I remember right, the hitch our trucks come with is only rated to 10K lbs. The truck can pull more but a 5th wheel or goose neck hitrch is required.

I was going to say something also Nick, but you beat me to it....however to answer the question at hand, I would use the t/h mode as well.
I just made a trip of about 3200 miles from CA to ID, WA, and OR and the truck pretty much lived in T/H the whole trip, the only time I seen the tranny heat up was when we hit Tacoma, WA at about 4:30 pm and were stuck in stop and go traffic for over an hour.
We went over some fairly decent mountain passes on the trip and the truck did not have much trouble at all, but my trailer was only about 7500lbs and it is a 5th wheel.
