Upgrading Dually Tire Size
Any opinions out there regarding upgrading the tire size for a dually? A tire shop I use often suggested that I stay with the stock size due to the 17" rim's limiting my options on the selection of simular load range tires. Also it was pointed out that the gap between the duals would narrow if not touch when going to a larger and fatter tire. I can understand that to a degree when I'm humping down the highway with my 5'ver which is 16,000 lbs. plus. But on the other hand, I seem to think that the tires look a bit small sitting in the wheel wells on the truck. So.........any past experiences out there from the dually gang?

I too am looking for ideas regarding new tires. Mine are only 235/80/17, and look real small. I am probably going to move up to a 265/70/17. My friend just put 285/70/17 on her 2500, and they appear too wide to use on the rear without spacers, which I don't want to do. To keep the load range and the spacing it appears there is not many options.
I have a chevy dually and got bigger (taller and wide) tires than were suggested for the stock wheels, everyone said that the tires would rub. I put them on anyway, I still have over an inch between the tires even when loaded.
If your trucks are cruisers and you tow a lot... maybe you would want to check into bigger wheels, like 19.5" wheels and commercial duty tires. I read on another forum some guys were suggesting bigger tires in back than front... don't do that. (It is not recommend) it upsets your anti-lock brake system.

As i work in the oil and gas industry, this truck sees the hiway 2x per year! The rest of the time she is mud, snow, and dirt road.

I steped up from 235/85s to 255/85s but I'm also running 16" wheels. That narrowed the gap in the duals to about a 1/2" on the bottom. I hauled 3k of granite in the back and the gap stayed the same as unloaded.
