new to DF, 1st post, so here goes...
2005 Ram HD 4x4 CTD
Finally wearing out stock Michelin LTX A/S 265/70 R17 after 55K mi.
I wanted to put on a larger tire next (I think the 265's just look too small) but I don't know a thing about tires, was hoping to go to 285/70 R17
My mechanic told me I needed to stay with an E rated tire that anything less would wear out too fast because CTD was so heavy.

Is this accurate?
Did a quick search and could not find any E rated 285's, suggestions?

I don't need anything specialized for off-road, and hoping to keep it around $225 per tire.

What kinda tire you wanting, All Season (like you had), Mud, All Terrain....?
Sounds like you'd be happy with a All Terrian around 33"

 

all season's...my off roading only extends to driving through fields and pasture's

 

If you want a tire that has exceptional tread life there are three choices I have seen so far for the price range you are looking for. bfg all terrain ko's ( I have them and hate them, but they last) however are d rated.. pro-comp all terrains. and the pro comp extreme all terrain which has a e rated tire. you can go up to 315-70-17 with a mere level kit and retain your factory ride and get out cheaper then a lift.

 

Alright, I'll check some sites for you...do you have any brand preference? goodyear, BFG...etc?

Well that is if he is willing to get away from the All Season tire, I've heard good things on Pro Comp A/Ts tread life,

screw it, order a 6" lift kit and get 35"s i did haha!except i have to wait a few more weeks till my damn wheels and tires come in

I'm running 305/75/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers A/T I paid around $220 a tire. They're E rated with a 40,000 mile treadlife warrenty. I really like them. Just my .02cents

check these out... I have 60k on mine and they are still going strong. I have 33's... have never been stuck with them because of them (stuck 2x, my own fault both times). The closest to the 285 is a 305-65-17... = 33-12.5-17...

edit: oh yeah, forgot to mention, not sure how fast the D rated tires wear out but the ones I have are E rated... run them @ 50psi (personal preference). anything less and it seems too mushy for me.
