When it comes to breaking in a diesel engine, I'm old school and feel you need to work a diesel engine to get it broke in properly. If you can't do a long drive then at a minimum keep 2000 Lbs. in the bed for 8-10 weeks and do as many 3-4 hour non-stop drives as you can. IMHO the best way to break in your new 6.7 is to either load 2250 Lbs. in the bed or hook it up to a 4,000 Lb. or heavier trailer and take it on a 36+ hour non-stop drive, except for fuel stops. If you want to know why I suggest a 36+ hour drive it’s because this is how we use to break in new or rebuilt semi engines when I use to drive long haul, except we would load the truck to 80,000 Lbs gross weight before the break in drive.
