stealership bastards.. Its rare to find a good guy. Parts/Service, Are these guys trained to be dicks somewhere, I just don't get it
There are several reasons that I post on this site. I want to try to let people see that not ALL dealerships should be called stealerships. There are a few of us that actually about care about how our business is perceived. It is hard to find a service advisor who is any more than a order taker/salesman. Most don't know as much about your truck as you do. They are just there to sell you what the tech thinks that you need. Most managers are pencil pushers that have no contact with customers unless the customer has a complaint. Not to toot my own horn, butI can turn wrenches and actually take some of the same test and classes that techs take.I am a car/truck guy. Our parts manager has been with us since the doors first opened, so he knows his stuff. My diesel tech is the best techthat I have ever known, and that goes for gas motors as well.We hired a Ford master techto have someone that was Ford certified. He is very good also on anything. We don't keep techs if they don't know their stuff. I have fired many a tech that was just a parts swapper. Hell I can get a guyfrom WalMart to swap parts. I want guysthat arehighly trained and trustworthy. There is alot of stuff that I don't know when it comes to vehicles, but I know where to find almost any answer.I could have found the torque specs for the trans bands in just a few minutes..
I post on this site also because I actually like to help people. and I want people to be informed so that their dealer doesn't break it off in them...
As far as the brake job that Bob started the post about. $350.00 is high for this repair. I was thinking closer to $200.00. I know that some of you are gonna think that this is still too high. But our dealership does have an on-car brake lathe that did cost $4500.00 that makes trueing the rotors much easier. Otherwise you have to take off the hub extension to get the rotor off and this makes it a little harder. I hope Bob will explain to his neighbor that she just needs to find a good friend or tech that she can trust and let them fix her truck.
I do work for a dealer but I know the all repairs don't have to be done at the dealer. I think that we do have some special tools that makes repairs easier.
I go to work just like everyone else that has a job. My goal is to make as much money as I possibly can. But I would have this goal if I was flipping burgers or driving a big rig. I think you will all agreewith me that you don't go to work to not make money. But I also knowthat making money by ripping people off is a dead end road. Sooner or later you are gonna run out ofcustomers.
And as far as brakepads go, I would never run cheap pads on anything that I own. I used Autozone pads on my Mustang when it was a daily driver. Every 6 months I would have to replace then because they were worn out. They also put loads of dust on my wheels. I switched to Napa gold pads andthe dust went away and theylasted 3 years.
I tell my customers the truth even if they don't want to hear it. I had rather make you mad by telling you the truth, then have you loving me and later find out that I lied.
OK enough of my rant, I just hate being lumped in to the "stealership" group.........

First off, this is a great site. Thanks to all the people that make this a place to learn and help others. Your weird pictures and such crack me up! I love the koolaide pic!

There are very few good dealerships. Even less good techs. Usually only one or two good ones per dealer. The rest are just scrubs. I have been wrenching for 20 plus years. I do all my own work. I have worked at a few new car dealers over the years, and was surprised at how many hatchet men and know nothings working at these places. Many are supposed to be ase,and manufacturer trained and are still don't know anything. It scares me to take something to be fixed by these guys. There aresome good parts guys and good techs out there, you just got to look around your area and find someone you can trust if you have a question or a repair beyond your ability. I am lucky to have a chrysler dealer that has a good parts person, and a good trans tech. I have learned where not to go.

As far as this brake job debate? It can be done with average common sense and skill. You pay for what you get for pads. Some pads are not meant for heavy towing, theyhold too much heat and wear fast.Rotors I just pitch and put on new. They areusually not too bad priced anymore, thoughmostly foreign. I have had good sucess with them.

David, I hope you know I meant not to lump you in with them. I was thinking maybe since you had experience in the dealership department you could enlighten me.

I am running the other 5.9. Gaser that is. Tired of 10 mpg and no power. I am a midwest farmer, not a full time tech. I repair all my own farm equipment. I have three 8.3 cummins on the farm. All 12 valve mechanical pumps. Love'em. Easy to work on. If you want more power, just pop off the cover on the back of pump and turn the screw.

Never had a diesel truck. Always had big block gm's. Fell in love with the second gen rams. Could'nt afford a 3/4 diesel, so ended up with a gaser. Looking to move to a ctd soon. Maybe a 24 valve second gen. Still reading and learning the in's and out's of the truck diesels. Not too much different than the ag 8.3's.

I never turn my rotors. If they are bad I pitch them and get new. As for any brake parts I always buy the best I can get. If I can't get them through work, I get the best NAPA can get. I have no idea on the price to get brakes done, I leave that up to the service manager. As for ASE certified techs I can tell you any person can take those test and pass them if they had a little common sense. There is a difference between taking a test and actually doing the work.

Wow 27 replies since I left this message!

This is exactly what I am talking about right here.
Bob Dodge dealershipsbrake pads are lifetime warranty through Mopar
Auto zones are not! In fact, they are junk you do not want to put these pads on a large truck that will be hualing things. Auto zone Padsare not rated to do that. You will be replaceing them every six months with multiple rotor replacements because these pads just eat up the rotors you do not want to be replaceing these rotors it is very complicated. Even if the rotors do need turned, which they may not, it is a very complicated job on these trucks and not for the novice. The dealership has an on the car brake lathe that would have cost them 8,000 and they can turn the rotrs on the truck. All being said I can go on and on more about why the dealership needs to do this repair glad I could enlighten you. safe driving
I got 110k out of my first set of autozone pads and rotors. Turned them put new pads on and have since got another 30k out of them and are in no way near needing replacement.
