Dealership Kool Aide
Who drinks the dealership kool aide???? This has always been something that bugs me and I have kept my mouth shut until now. I'm not picking on anyone here so if you work at a dealership don't take this offensively because I'm not picking on you.
I don't know for the life of me why anyone in there right mind would take a vehicle to a dealship to get a repair outside of warranty, unless it was very difficult repair that was vehicle specific. The cost alone is enough to make me wonder why people rush to the dealers and pay the rediculous labor and parts costs, when most reputable shops can do just as good a job for a fraction of the cost, plus the aftermarket parts in most cases are better than the ones that Dodge is going to bolt back on.
What has set off this rant you ask? Well I'll tell you. My wife's retarded friend (that's what I call her we'll just leave it at that) has a 99 3500 dually. It has been sitting in her driveway for 6 months because the "brakes are bad". Turns out all it needs is new pads and rotors turned. So after listening to her cry [sm=violin.gif]to my wife for an hour and a half about how she can't haul her horses anywhere because her truck is broken and she has no money, I offer to do the work FOR FREE [sm=headbang.gif]if she will just go to Autozone and get new pads and pay to get the rotors turned.
Well she quickly told me that she was going to take it to the "dealer" so that it could be done right AND have a warranty. The cost for this so called expertise? $350. I told her that a set of pads from autozone was $35 and the rotors cost $12 each to turn. Grand total, $59.Does it have a warranty she asked? Yes the pads have a 2 year warranty I replied. Well that wasn't good enough for her.
The truck is still un-driveable and she never did tell me what type of warranty the dealer was going to give her (if any at all). So again I ask, what is the facination with "the dealer"????

Bob Dodge dealershipsbrake pads are lifetime warranty through Mopar
Auto zones are not! In fact, they are junk you do not want to put these pads on a large truck that will be hualing things. Auto zone Padsare not rated to do that. You will be replaceing them every six months with multiple rotor replacements because these pads just eat up the rotors you do not want to be replaceing these rotors it is very complicated. Even if the rotors do need turned, which they may not, it is a very complicated job on these trucks and not for the novice. The dealership has an on the car brake lathe that would have cost them 8,000 and they can turn the rotrs on the truck. All being said I can go on and on more about why the dealership needs to do this repair glad I could enlighten you. safe driving

OMG OMG I can't beleve I just read that load of crap.
Please enlighten me on why only the DEALER can do this job right? I have changes brake pads and shoes on just about every car/Truck I have ever owned. I am also a machinist by trade. Please tell me what is so complicated that only a dealer can turn these rotors properly??

Even if she doesn't want Auto Zone pads, she can order good pads from just about anywhere, even stock replacements if that would make her feel better. But having to go to the dealership for brakes and paying 350 is retarded. Anyone with 2 hands can change brake pads and drive to a local machine shop or wherever and have their rotors turned. Like stated, dealerships are for buying new cars and warranty work, everything else can be done by yourself, with your handy buddy or a local garage.
