I will be figuring out how to install a secondary fuel system in my truck. Up here in New England, there is NO way I could run a mixture of Veggie oil and diesel without having problems. The Veggie oil needs to go into the fuel system once the motor is up to temperature, and the fuel system should be flushed out of veggie oil before you shut the motor off. Basically, you start and stop the motor on Diesel and run it on 100% vegetable oil when the motor is up to temp (about 5 to 15 minutes, depending upon the temp).

I'm been watching and reading a lot about running my truck on alternative fuels - and no, not just for the cost factor. While I do have a source for free WVO, I also would like to try to be a little more green.

I know there are a few conversion kits. But dumping a few thousand for a second heated tank is just a bit too much for me right now. Especially after dropping a FEW THOUSAND dollars on new fuel pumps when my lift pump died on my last year. (Freakin' Dodge didn't even want to talk to me 'cuz I was a 2 months out of warranty. Grr...but I digress.)

So - does anyone have any experiences with Dual Fuel systems? Any links to share?

Oh yeah - Here's my truck:

Thanks! I pull a camper with it during the warmer seasons and I use it as a daily driver during the week. On weekends, I also play in a band. So it hauls musical gear around too. What band? The Whiskey River Band (r) - http://www.thewhiskeyriverband.com

Ok - back on topic...

I'm really looking forward to reading the experiences of people here with alternative fuels. Way to go! I will make sure to share my experiences when I start my project with my beast. I love my truck and don't want anything bad to happen to it, but I do think that we should not have to put up with the high prices of fuel anymore when there are plenty of alternatives that are better for the planet and the truck.

Actually - The real reason I want to run veggie is to see if the exhaust really does smell like a fryer. LOL!!! jk

You have to ask?
Why MUD, of course!!! Doesn't every self-respecting truck have mud it's tires???

Even pulling a trailer, I'm not afraid of a little mud-boggin'. Here I am (in the orange tank top) scouting out my path around the bus that got buried up to it's axles. If I didn't have the trailer on, I would have pulled him thru too. LOL!

You mean me? No - I wasn't even running Bio Diesel yet when the lift pump failed. FYI - 2002's have horrible fuel pumps, and will fail. If you take your '02 in for any kind of fuel related service, a dealer will likely want to change out your lift pump. What really pissed me off is the low pressure was sensed by the computer, but the computer never lit a freakin' light to tell me something was up with the pressure! grr...

Lesson learned from that? INSTALL GAUGES FOR EVERYTHING! For now, I pull codes whenever I service the truck or have any kind of strange blip, burp or hiccup. Speaking of pulling codes - what does anyone else out there use/recommend? I need to buy a new code-reader.

i am very interested in this wvo. dont you have to filter the crap out of it to just pour it in straight to the tank with the diesel? all the systems that i have read about says you do. they dont say anything about putting it in with your other fuel. they say keep it separate. i am going to try it as soon as i get the lowdown on it. dont want to dump a couple grand in it either. this sounds alot better to blend it in with the fuel if the temp is hot enough to do so.

Here is my understanding of why you need a dual fuel system. Anyone - please let me know if I am wrong in any way!

If you run straight veggie oil and you shut your motor off - you could screw up your injectors causing thousands of dollars of repair work. That's why you need dual fuel systems or a blend. If you're going to do a blend, you need to make sure that you're in a location that stays above 70 degrees...even at night or keep the blend mostly diesel. If you don't, you will have the same problem as running it straight.

The cold veggie oil will cause the cold injectors to not spray correctly, which will cause incomplete combustion, which will cause a build up on the injectors, which will cause them to fail completely after a while. Running the WVO on a motor that is up to normal operating temperature will not cause any harm, but you MUST switch back to bio, or regular diesel for 5 minutes before you shut the motor off to flush out the WVO.

You must filter the WVO to remove any particles, if not, your fuel filter will clog up in no time.
