Newbie Diesel Oil Change

Newbie Diesel Oil Change
Changed the oil in my 2006 Cummins for the first time yesterday (10K miles). Placed the plastic oil drain pan underneath and proceeded to remove the drain plug. Removed it and the oil started coming out and all was good. But the oil was coming out really fast, faster than it could go through the hole in the plastic oil drain pan. I sweated that out, the oil quickly reached the top but thankfully didn't go over on to the driveway. Should have read the manual as to the quantity of the oil!
So the oil was black black and even after I put the new oil in, its still rather black. It concerned me since the oil in my cars looks new, especially after an oil change. I'm guessing this is normal for diesels?

RE: Newbie Diesel Oil Change
Yeah, the first time I changed mine I used one of those drain pans that looks like a plastic jerry can with a drain hole in the side. It had a five gallon capacity, so I thought it would work fine. Well, the oil came out so fast that it overwhelmed the little drain hole and at least three quarts went over the side and made a huge mess on the driveway! Now I have a quick drain thing installed so that next change should be no sweat, even if I'm on my way to a black tie event!
