Tanks for the explanation Riv. That really makes sense. I knew you'd know the answer.
New question ... Is that really the water line on that boat? I can't believe that it sinks that far down.

Hey Mayfair.......Well, it's very close to the water line. Actually, every ship when built has an engineered stability factor designed for that particilar ship. It's approved and accepted world wide.
On each side of every ship, near the midships area, there is a symbol for visually inspecting the vessels load line. Individual lines indicate maximums for various water conditions. For example, salt water is more dense than freash water, so when a vessel is loaded in the river down to a certain draft, then when entering salt water, the vessel will rise to a degree and show less draft.
The separation of paint colors on the hull do represent the close proximity of the load line.
The photo of that tanker you see is one of our usual maiximum sized tankers that enter the river. I was on it that day, and my brother was passing by on another ship and snapped the pic.
The characteristics of that ship is around 100,000 Summer Dead Weight Tons, about 800 ft long, by 143 ft wide, with a maximum load line of around 50 ft. They don't load to that draft coming into the river due to our maximum draft restrictions, but usually come in at 40 ft.
Occassionally we see a Cape class vessel that has a SDWT of around 160,000 but it's somewhat rare.
Kind of gives a new meaning to "Heavy Metal".

I was looking at that what looks like a ladder on the side of the boat that goes down to the line. I was like Holy Crap, does that thing really sink that low?
Why do boats have that big round snout on the front on the bottom? Wouldn't theymove faster with a pointier hull?
Have you ever docked one of those suckers, and seen a bunch of illegals hop out that were transported from far away lands?

Here's a 'Laker for ya'. Powered by 4 3600hp Diesels. 1004ft long and holds about 79,000 tons (coal or iron ore) with a summer draft of 34ft. Can see these things all summer long. Don't know how much fuel these will hold, but I wouldn't want the bill at $4.20 a gal.!
