Help a gasser out :)
Hey ive got a 4 dr 4x4, it wont fit on the trailers that uhaul and penske rent, im gonna be driving the biggest truck penske rents but since im having issues trailering my truck it means i have to drive 1100 miles, fly back and drive my truck 1100 miles ugh.. i was told that those veh transports that keep the front wheels up is not good on a 4x4 and that you cant keep all 4 wheels on pavement either.
i know ive seen trucks tailing behind those motorhomes with no problems.... what can i do to trailer my truck??? i really dont want to drive it twice, plus gas is so damn expensive.
ive thought about buying a twin axle trailer myself and trailering it but i have no place to keep the trailer till i can sell it and i know they dont depcreciate that much but dont want to lose my butt selling it...
Thanks

there shouldn't be any problem using a car dolly (two wheels on front, 2 rear on pavement). thats what they make them for, as long as your 4x4 is NOT engaged. also, towing with all 4 on the pavement is no problem either. all tiy have to do is leave your transfer case in neutral and you key in the ignition so your steering wheel can turn. all you need is a tow-bar and som magnetic tow lights. how do you think those mexicans get all those vehicles to mexico? and thats how i get my jeep around too.
I guess I don't see how it's a problem to put your truck on a dolley. I'd just put the tranny and the transfer case in neutral. I don't see what it could hurt honestly.
i think for an auto, tranny in park and transfer case in neutral. but i would double check that. the transfer case in neutral disconnects everything regardless what the tranny says. in my jeep manual, it says to put the auto in park. i bet there is a towing section in the ram manual but i havent checked it out. guess i could tho...
there is a section in the manual called "recreational towing" which is for towing behind a RV etc.
1. both manual shift and electronic shift transfer cases must be shifted into NEUTRAL.
2. atomatic transmissions must be placed in PARK. manual transmissions must be left in gear (NOT in neutral).
check your manual for all the steps to make sure you really are in nuetral on your transfer case. its pretty self explanatory but its 14 steps in the book.

Rear-wheel, four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles must have drive shaft disconnected and removed. Consult your auto dealer.
also on the tow dolly it says that wheels over 18" are too large, their biggest that they say is 275-50 17
and the max wheelbase on the car carrier is 125" my truck is 140"
so i think the 4 on the ground is the only option, where can i get something to allow me to hook my front of the truck to the rear of the rental truck?

shouldnt put too much tongue weight... the wheels on the dolly line up with the wheels of the vehicle last i saw. the weight should all almost be on the dolly axle.
u-haul sells a tow bar for abot 150 bucks. not sure what the weight rating on them are though. almost all rv places should carry universal ones though. one bad thing about tow bars, which i didnt need to worry much about with the jeep, is that the brackets need to be bolted to your front, which usually means drilling if you look hard enough on line, you MIGHT be able to find a vehicle specific one that will mount to your tow hook bolts, if you have them.
