Default Confused... I need help! *Hey Drew, got a question*

Ok, I changed the diff fluid today, front was gravy no problem at all... and thanks to the lift the track bar wasn't in the way of any of the bolts either, it couldn't have been easier. The front either holds 4.2 or 4.6 pints depending on what axle I have. Either way I got about 2.25 quarts in it and was about 1/4" below the fill hole, so I thought that was close enough.

Next I moved on to the rear end. I is supposed to hold 8.4 or 8.9 quarts depending on what axle I have. I was only able to get about 3 or 3.5 quarts in before it started over flowing, so I am about .75-1 quart short right? I also ran the truck up on some concrete blocks about 4-6" in the rear to account for the rotation of the housing caused by the rear lift blocks.

What should I do?

Also, while drainging the rear diffI took the fill plug out before I pulled the cover, and quite a bit of oil came out. I wouldn't have been concerned about the oil coming out of the plug, and would have just assumed that it was over filled some how from the factory, but since I can't get the right amount back in I don't know what to do.\

Oh yeah. The front was pretty clean looking, just looked normal. The rear fluid however was very milky and as the last of it was slowing running out of the case I could see white streaks of fluid flowing out with the oil that was flowing out. The white streaks appeared to be not mixing with the oil, maybe water? I looked at the end of the rear breather hose, and it did appear to have somedirt and stuff that looked like the silt that comes out of the streams i have been crossing .

Maybe dump the old oil back into the containers the new oil came in and see if it is roughly the same amount. seems odd it took that much less.

the milky stuff was water, I know it takes a bit over a full gallon to fill my rear axel, while the front take a bit over half a gallon.

as long as the fluid level is about 1/4 inch below the hole your ok.

MMmmm water. That reminds me of my current engine project at work. Ever see someone loose a water pump and drive it back to their yard 20 miles away fully loaded? Nothing like having 6 gallons of coolant in the crankcase.

It doesn't take 8+ quarts, only a little more than a gallon (i.e. 4 quarts or so)

Don't sweat it, it may have been OVER filled at the factory. Not a real big deal in the rear end, it all gets frothed up anyways. As long as it's not over the pinion bearing, you won't have problem. If it over the pinion bearing, it can seep a little bit during operation. Again, not a huge deal.

Just fill it until it comes out of the hole and you'll be fine.

Did you jsut get done driving the truck when you changed the rear? If so, the fluid is gonna be a bit milky. It from the air getting mixed in the with that heavy oil back there. The front is a bit lighter and doesn't froth as bad.

first off were you on your driveway? It should have a slant and therefore allow less liquid before it spills. I change mine on a slant so more drains out from the rear and then fill up as much as I can and then drive around the block and park level and fill the rest in.
Aint it some **** that its just a lil rubber plug. I though for sure it was covering a nut. Damn cheap *** Chrysler LOL.

As for the milky stuff, savage we've already had that talk when I caught you and the exhaust pipe. What gives man show some self control. LOL.

Oh did you check your teeth for chips and did you clean the magnet?

Sorry the "8.4-8.9 quart" was a typo, I meant pints. So 4.2-4.45 quarts, and I put in maybe 3.25 quarts or so.Hopefully it was just over filled at the factory. so if it is overfilled your saying it can seep outfrom where the drive shaft goes into the front of the housing? I drove the truck about 3 miles, and then it sat for about 4 hrs before i opened up the rear end. I don;t know if that is enough time for it to not be foamy any more. The front and rear of my truck supposedly had the same oil front and rear, not a lighter in the front and heavier in the rear.

I definiteyl filled it untill it came out of the hole, but it was not where near just under a gallon of oil. I could probably put another quart in it by filling it with the pump and closing off the remaing gaps in the fill opening, and then pulling the pump hose out and quickly putting the plug in.... not sure if it is worth it though.

It is just concering that you guys' trucks actually hold just over a gallon and mine just over 3 quarts, no what I mean.

Maybe your little axled gas powered truck just uses rubber plugs, but our big boy trucks have a 3/8" square drive nut with a rubber washer [8D]... j/k dude .

I did inspect the gears, didn't look like it would be possible to chip them since they were so freakin big and tough looking. I also looked at the magnet (on the end of the fill plug), and the front barely had anything on it, the rear had a little more but not much at all.

Mywife always says that I love my truck more than her.... if she found out about the exhaust pipe "situation" she would probably leave me, so keep it on the DL .
