I'm looking at a 04 2500 with 37k on it.
Anything in particular that I should look at or be aware of?
This would be my first diesel.
I had to what until fuel got to 5 bucks!!!
Has anybody had issues with the ULSD?
Test drive is on Monday A.M.
The first thing I would look for is evidence of a programmer or performance module. You can tell if its been hot roded by checking the exhaust manifold or turbo elbow for a 1/8' npt hole that has been pluged or has a pyrometer in it. Thats fairly low mileage for an 04 if it has been taken care of.
That`s not always the case though. Not everyone puts a pyro or boost gauge on them. That's the bigger concern. I'm okay with seeing a pyrometer, a lack of one would be more cocerning. see next post.....
If they had a programmer and nothing else, there is no way thatYOU could ever tell. Then they think they can just uninstall and no one is the wiser. See next post....
MAKE them check the ECM with you there. MAKE them update the flashware on the ECM....WITH YOU STANDING THERE. Then their is no excuse for someones elses old tuning being in there and you getting hosed on a possible warranty claim.
Now, something like an Edge box or othe underhood ECM will usually be mounted to the fuse box cover or the side of the battery. Lok for tape residue on either of these. Also, look at any wiring on the drivers side and see if it looks like there was tape or zip ties there. See next....
Also, look at the fise box, under the cover. Look for any cuts that may have been used to pass a wire through. Other than that, there ain't much else to look for, in terms of boxes or programmers.
Amen to what firemedic said. The Cummins is a drug. Mods are the temporary fix. You will get a new mod done, you will be content for a day or two, then you are gonna want more. $3,500 into mine so far. More to come.
