What brand of transmission does the new 2005 5.9 cummins high output 610 diesel have?
Has dodge improved the transmissions for the 2005? Some people have been telling me that the 04 and 03 diesels are having transmission problems

 

Look at Alldata and se if anything shows up there. I've not noticed any talk of it here, but admittedly, I could have missed it.

 

the 04 600 had the 48RE automatic..not sure what the 610 has...probably the same. I think it has the NV series of manual transmissions.

 

for 2005 the auto's are the 48RE's. it is much improved 47RE and can handle the output of the cummins engine easily even with 15K straped to the back

the manual however changed in 05. the 04.5's used the NV5600 which is a tried and very reliable tranny. the 05's have the GETRAG G-56 which is also a 6 speed. it's reliability is currently unknown, however Dodge did use trannys from this maker a while back.

I have the NV5600, no complaints with just over 11,000 on the odometer. took about 9000 miles for the syncro's to get broken in and being to shift easier.

if your planning on pulling alot the stick would be better since you can install an exhaust brake, however, if your just going to do the occasional tow the auto will hold well

edit: I should have also mentioned that the 04.5's have the 48RE's as well since the 47RE's had a little trouble handeling the 600 even in stock form.

 

we would be pulling a 20 ft boat with it about 5 times a year through the steep hills of the ozarks and the auto tranny would be shifting a lot. Is there a 5 speed automatic tranny for the 05 610?

i think the 48RE has tow/haul, doesn't it? It locks out OD and changes the shift points.

and by pushing that you would save alot of shifting on the tranny


BTW, something I forgot to mention. I test drove a Ford and chevy diesel before I got mine. I was already sold on the Dodge, I just wanted to see what they had to offer.

both the ford and chevy had great acceleration from dead stop. but at 45mph, stomp the go pedal and both engines had to kick out of OD to get anything considering worthy acceleration. the dodge on the other hand, great accel from stop, however I noticed something different when I stood on the pedal at 45. the tranny didnt downshift. I heard the turbo spool and I was FIRMLY planted into the seat. something the ford and chevy trucks couldnt do even after downshifting.

the Chevy (Isuzu) Duramax, and the Ford (International Navistar) Powerstoke dont make good torque untill 2500 or so RPM and max HP is around 3200 rpm

the Dodge Cummins makes max torque at a low ~1500 RPM and it's a flat curve throughout the power band with max HP hitting in at 2900 RPM. so not only does the engine fare better, but can also tow better and last longer.

I have a picture of the difference in the pistons and rods between the three diesels. the Cummins(5.9L) compared to the Ford (6.0L) and the Chevy (6.6L) are massive.
