Default Bad Rings 2006 Cummins 5.9

My buddies 06 5.9 just dropped number 6 rings at 76k. Dodge dealer said he either dusted it or hasnt changed the oil enough. If the engine was dusted wouldnt all the rings/cylinders be bad. He has an after market air filter and has NEVER had dirt/dust past the filter and runs amsoil with their dual filter system. A local diesel mechanic is currently doing a 06 5.9 with 105k has the same issue, he said the rings are soft and it is a problem Cummins is aware of and is doing nothing to correct it, and the only rings available now is only from Cummins no aftermarket ones as of yet. So in another 75 to 100k drop the rings again? I figure if this is true with the heat and poor exhaust evacuation on number six if this contributes to the problem. Any others have this issue yet???

# 6 tends to be the hottest cylinder, and if any fueling mods have been done, or a possible bad injector it could very eaisly burn the cylinder, as far as...

"he" doesnt know what he is talking about, and there are plenty of availble aftermarket pistons and rings

I have 122K miles on my '06 and she is going strong. That dealer is also full of crap! If they find evidence of dust in the intake then fine, as far as not changing the oil, did he?

Yes he changes his oil regularly.
He was running a Edge Juice with an aftermarket air intake. Now he has the Smarty. I have an Edge with Juice, TDI intake and an ATS exhaust manifold. I havent had any probs with my truck but it has low miles. He beats his real hard I use level 3 on mine. He uses level 5 and the bonus level 6. I aked my buddy if there were aftermarket rings and pistons available and he said no, I dont think his mechanic said that. I know number 6 gets the hottest and thought thats why it failed esp with a stock exhaust manifold and running an Edge.

If he's running a stock turbo and using that Edge on 5 or 6, I'm betting it's more than ring damage.

Edge runs extremely hot, especially on those higher levels.

Yes, there are aftermarket rings and psitons available. Haisley Machine, Scheid Diesel, Mahle....just a few names that come to mind. Standard size and up to .030 over are available.

Where do have the EGT probe(s) at? Pre-turbo or post-turbo and what kind of temps are you seeing?

Ouch! wow, i can smell burnt pistons from here...

as coal train said, it would be interesting to know where the egt probe is, and what temps, he was seeing

I know this thread is a few months old. But I'm having the same problem except on number one cylinder. I bought the truck with 60k on it and I've made two payments and its sat for over a month with this problem.
When it 1st happened I was on my way home and it spat out the rear main seal, I had it towed to a Chrysler dealership and they had it for almost a month, I had to buy another car because they took alot longer then what they said. Anyways I got the truck back, drove it home and check engine light, so I stop at a chevy dealer (Chrysler dealer is a 2hr drive) and they check the code "cylinder 1 misfire" and its running like crap at an idle and getting ALOT of blow by. So I assume the ****ty dealership only fixed the rear main seal and not the actually problem that caused the rear main to be spat out. I called Chrysler and basically they want all the service records for the truck or they won't do squat. So Im up **** creek and Chrysler won't help, I'm not sure how they expect me the new owner to obtain 60k miles worth of maintenance records when I've had it for roughly 2 months.
This is my 1st Chrysler experience and its been terrible from the start.
Oh mods are aftermarket air filter and exhaust.... Thats it.
Sorry about my 1st post being a long post, just venting a little frustration

the computer wont tell you if the cylinder is missing or not (due to comperssion) there is probably something wrong with the injector or the wiring to it, thats what the code is saying anyway, as far as blow by, have you compared it to another cummins engine, these engines tend to move a bit of volume through the breather, (compared to a gas engine, a lot of people think its a big problem when its not) i have never heard of blow by pushing out the rear main on a cummins, a lot of times, seals can just **** the bed
