Exclamation Oil change question please.......

Just changed the oil and filter on my '05 Cummins, made sure to drain it all. I filled the filter, poured the rest in the engine, followed by the remaining 2 gallon jugs (3 jugs total, 12 quarts) why then does the dipstick now read an inch over the fill line? I know with gas engines this is bad due to cavatation, but is it an issue with this engine? Should I drain it down a bit or leave it in....thanks!

Have you started the engine and let it sit for a while before checking again? If you have, I would probably drain a little out.

I usually start with 10qts, then add a little if necessary. What does your manual say?

5.9 recommends 12 quarts. prior to putting the new filter in the truck fill the filter with a quart of oil and put remaining 11 qts in. It will be fine.

maby they changed something for the 3rd gens, but i dont think they did, the spec for 02 and older is 11 qts, and seems how he had to drain some out to mantain the correct level on the dipstick, im sure it is still 11qts
