Default Need injector pump ....$$$ ouch!

Alright so im driving my bosses 99 24v dually and it dies while making a turn ....i thought maybe it ran out of fuel ...2hrs later on the side of the road still cant get it started finally i have a buddy who works at the dodge dealership come out and run diagnostics injector pump throws three different codes...with out a doubt he says injector pump needs to be replaced... !$2k! so we ended up towing it home and parking it till we can get it fixed ....after a very minimal search of the internets i have come to the conclusion that this year model injection pump is a piece of crap ....and expensive....true or false? If at all possible i would like to find a fairly cheap injector pump... is that possible? if not since im going to have to spend some money is there a better injection pump for this year model than the VP44? last question ...is this something i can replace myself or there any little tricks or tools i need to know about? ......sry for the bombardment of questions ....

run a volume test on your lift pump to see if your lift pump is putting out enough pressure to your injection pump..
low lift pump pressure will cause injection pump failure

This is the only pump for the 98.5 -2002 models, unless you want to P-Pump it, even more $$$$$. Yes, the VP-44 is expensive and you can no longer get new ones, they are all remanufactured. You also need to get an aftermarket lift pump on order to supply the VP better than the stock unit. The stock unit probably failed and took the VP with it.

Here is a link for an injector pump: http://www.dieselautopower.com/

If you are mechanically inclined, you should be able to do it in about 2 days.

Most people say 4-6 hours to replace the injector pump. It's not so much the VP-44 that is a POS, but the lift pump that is a POS. Lift pump goes= dead VP-44 in as little as a couple of minutes.

This seems to be one of the best places to get a reman pump:

All 24 v's from 98.5 to '02 have an inline lift pump on the block next to/behind the fuel filter. This fails and takes the VP with it.

I ment to say 24v can be fitted with the more robust inline injection pump from the 12v.

What are you guys running for aftermarket lift pumps? The 01 I just bought is using the air dog system thats supposed to keep air out of the fuel and filter it also.Is this system any good or should I consider something else?

As long as you have a fuel pressure gauge and keep it above 10 psi at wide open throttle, that airdog will be fine.
