Default first time dodge owner and new to forum

hello everyone my name is chip i just bought a 96 2500. older truck i know but i heard it was a heck of a engine and i got a steal of a deal. i drive a 2004 ford f150 and it has nothing on the new/old one. i will probaly never drive the ford again. i just have a few questions. can i upgrade to get more out of my engine and what can i do? anyway happy to have a dodge should have done it sooner.

Congrats on the "new" truck! Lots of great info on this site, gets hard not to do mods with everything you can learn here.

Maintenance first. Make sure everything is up to snuff. (Plenum.....) How many miles on your truck?

There are tons of upgrades for a 12v cummins. Check the killer dowel pin has been taken care of and if it's a manuel trans the fifth gear retaining nut.

The truck has 140000 miles on it everything is in good condition(a dodge mechanic) looked it over and went through everything yea it's a cummings a friend told me I can put programmers on it but another friend said I could I just want to know before I spend the money it's a auto but the transmission is rebuilt with upgrades

you can def. put a programmer on it she will blow your mind what a programmer will do. My buddies got a cummins with a programmer and its nuts burns the tires off like crazy 140,000 miles isnt even broke in yet lol

The 96 is a mechanical engine so there is no tuner to install since there is no computer to control the engine. 1998.5 they switched over from mechanical to electronic engine.

You can still make some good horse power with the mechanical engine, but it requires parts to be installed/modified ect... verses just plugging a tuner in.
