Shifting
Hey yall, bought a 96 Ram 2500 12v last night, and I had a few questions about how it shifts. Ive never had a cummins, or any diesel (besides an idi ford) so this is kinda new to me. When I take off, about 1/4 throttle, it seems to go up to around 2k, 2.25k rpm, then shift to second. Is it normal for the revs to go up that high before it shifts? Also, it doesn't hit OD until around 45-55 mph. Normal? This morning I started it up and let it run for about 5 mins (around 25-30 degree this am) and when i took off, it seemed to be a little sluggish and hard shifting until she got warm. Is this all normal or signs of a soon to be blown trans? Thanks yall

TTT, really no one has any thoughts? Id like to try to get this figured out and I know you all are very helpful. I'm gonna try to get a video of it tomorrow or saturday and put it up, but it just seems like it takes a little bit to get it up to speed, are stock 12vs really just that sluggish? It never slipped out of gear, but i dont know if its just slipping while accerating now because the revs go up, but the speed increases with the revs. Just a little confusing. Does anyone have a thought?

When you let your truck warm up try putting it into neutral as it will help get everything warmed up and the oil wont be as thick. I know the OD in my truck kicks in at just about 45mph but thats a different tranny. I would think that yours is just normal. The shift points I cant really help with sorry. But if everything shifts fine and there is no rude noises I would not worry to much about it.

Ok got a little more info paid a lot of attention to her today as I drove it. It seems to go through the gears fine. What I dont get is, it takes a little bit to get it going, but once its in overdrive, if I give it throttle it really pulls and the speed increases much faster. Is this normal? Also, when in Drive, if I floor it the RPMS wont go past about 2400-2500 rpm, normal? Or is this trans dying

Im not really sure because I dont have to much experience with the cummins and the way they act. Hopefully someone else will soon chime in. I can only help you at to a certain point bud. Have you done any kind of service on the tranny? like changed the fluid and whatnot?

Ok today I checked the trans fluid and not surprisingly it was real low no wonder it slipped when it was cold...dont think I did to much damage cause its shifting fine now and the fluid doesnt smell burnt and isnt discolored. Still wont rev past 2300-2500 RPM when floored in gear though. That normal for stock truck and trans?
