2007 5.9L cummins any good?
So i currently have a 2002 ram 1500 with the 5.9L gas engine and im kinda tired of getting 10MPG. there is a dealer by my work that has a 2007 2500 quad cab with the 5.9L cummins, big horn edition. not sure of the price yet but thought id get your guys opinion on this truck?
it has 93,000 miles on it now which is about 15,000 per year which seems like a lot but hopefully mean a lot of hwy miles.
http://reno.craigslist.org/ctd/4382761621.html
my 2002 only has 77,000 so i would trade it in. dont do a whole lot of towing but i do work for a boat company so i do once in a while which would hopfully save the transmission. some people say not worth the price aan maintenance for a diesel unless you tow a lot? is there a lot of maintenance? is there to many mods for the transmission to handle? would i have to do any transmission mods? what about MPG's?
any and all input or advice will be appreciated!!

07 Common rail 2500 Cummins, good platform, decent mileage, great towing. A brief look at KBB for this 5.9 4wd at 93k with an automatic tranny would run a car lot price of about 35k. Many who tow heavy would prefer a straight drive/manual (it depends on your preference). All models have their quirks, but based on what I've heard they are an excellent choice. Many of your questions are specific to this truck and you would have to go see and talk to the dealer to get those answers and test drive the truck. You should do some home work to understand the common rail injectors and proper maintenance.
As for your current truck, I'd sell it out right and not do a trade in (you'll get more money).
I think you have to ask yourself what do you need in terms of towing & mileage. They do like to be worked hard and maintained. Have you given thought to the 2014 3.0 Cummins diesel offered by Dodge? No more towing than you intend and mileage is big on the radar, I would consider the 3.0 Cummins. There are several mods that have been performed or are being performed to convert a Ram 1500 to a 4bt Cummins prime mover for mileage and light towing (engines built from 94 to 98 I believe).
Then there's the rest.......(I prefer my 2nd gen Cummins 4wd diesel, it does all I need it to do). K

that's because there is no 3.0 cummins lol. it's not a cummins in the 1500's...
The new light duty truck getting a smaller cummins is the nissan titan. they are getting a 5.0L V8 cummins.
dodge only has a cummins in the HD trucks. the 1500s have a mercedes diesel I think it is... it's same diesel they are using in the jeep cherokees and it is NOT a cummins.

You can tell I'm stuck in the 2nd gens. K.
It's 3.0 liter Italian v6 echo diesel 2014 Ram 1500 . My apologies and correction. K
In January 2011, VM Motori launched its brand new engine 3.0L V6. With 241 HP and 550 N·m (410 lb·ft) the A630 is among the best diesel engines in its class.[citation needed] As result of the collaboration with Fiat Powertrain Technologies the engine features the Multijet2 technology for improved performance, fuel economy and NVH. The first applications of the 3.0L V6 are the 2014 Grand Cherokee, the 2012 Lancia Thema and the 2014 Ram pickup.

the diesel would have more power with the fuel economy though... tow like nothing is back there too.
nice thing about diesel vs gas: come to a hill or need to pass someone... no need to downshift. just put your foot down, the turbo will take care of the rest.
gasser has to down shift and bring rpms up to make any power.
