Default Need Advice on '04 Cummins Mods?

Ok, just a couple quick questions. Just recently upgraded from an '02 Dodge Cummins to an '04 Dodge Cummins.....love the truck but going to look into getting better MPG and a lil' extra power.

I'm going to get a chip/programmmer along with a better intake system in the next few weeks. Want to get some gauges as well to monitor whats going on...never put 'em on my '02 Cummins.

Any suggestsions on a chip/programmer? Really wanna get the full Bully Dog kit but its a decent amount of $$$. Found the Edge EZ Tuner for a decent price from a couple of outlets? What do ya guys think?

Next, what gauges do I need?

Also, I've noticed that some parts are for 2004.5-2006? Clarification on this please? Dont wanna order the wrong parts for my truck....

Thanks guys....

So far as gauges are concerned, Pyro mounted pre turbo, tranny temp and a boost gauge should work for you.
Maybe a fuel pressure as well.

I have an AFE Stage 2 intake, cat delete with a 30" straight thru magnaflow, both of which in my opinion lost low end torque. the upper end gains are significant. turbo spools much faster and it reaches it's peak boost easier. That and my edge w/attitude makes the truck really scoot. as for milage mods... for now i'd consider keeping the stock intake & exhaust and just doing the bully dog setup. with fuel prices these days, the grin factor may not be worth it.

one thing that has shown consistant improvement in milage is the addition of 16 oz of power service diesel (PSD) & 8 oz of marvel mystery oil (MMO) to each full tank of diesel. personally I get 1.5~2.0 better mpg with the mix in there and the motor runs better IMO.

the 04.5 and up is referring to the 325 hp motor. the 03's had a 250 hp (?) and a 305 hp motor. 04's had the 305's thru mid year when the 325's were introduced as a standard motor (from my understanding anyway's...)

Check the plate on the motor (driver's side), it should say 305 or 325 hp (325hp is the 04.5+ 600 series)

Ok thanks guys! I checked the date of manufacture on the driver side door, its 05/04....so I'm guessing I have the 305HP motor. I'm probably not going to do the exhaust, diesel exhaust kits are very $$$. I might try and get the Bully Dog programmer, lot of $$$ though!

Whats the "S&B Intake" you guys are talking about? Who makes it? I was looking at the K&N FIPK intake kit, have a buddy who can get it for me for a good price, any opinions?

I'm really looking at the Edge EZ Tuner. Do you guys have any thoughts or opinions on the cheaper "plug-in box" chips? They seem to range from $300 to $450. I guess its like anything else, you get what you pay for!

I'm definitely going to have to look into mixing in the MMO in with my fuel. I always throw in some PowerService pretty much every tank and never noticed any mileage gains.

I have a 2nd opinion on the exhaust mod... it rocks! my guess is there is some sort of adaptation for torque management which once it was settled down, allowed the max amount of torque the system would alow. not 100% on this but it's my guess.

right now I have my edge set to stock and the amount of torque & hp is at or greater than the edge by itself set to 1. It rocks! lots of low end now. [&:]

Yeah, Ok...so I was wrong, I do have the 325HP motor. Oh yeah!! Looking at Edge EZ chips on EBay right now....the price is good. So much cheaper than the Bully Dog....

For my needs (tow a 17x7 enclosed trailer to motocross races), the Edge chip should suit me fine. Throw on some sort of intake...should be good to go right?

Gotta get some sweet gauges too!

AFE stage II with a pro-guard filter, 4" straight thru exhaust, no kitty

right now my box is set to stock and with the intake exhaust only, it feels as strong if not stronger that the box set on 25 hp w/o intake & exhaust mods. This should get you the best mpg/hp bump during the high fuel cost times...

with the edge, your giving it more fuel for your power bumps so somewhere in there your milage will drop if you bump the power too much... IMO anyways...
