Default AMSOil Synthetic oil change...advice please?

Looking into switching from my standard Rotella to AMSOil synthetics so I can run longer change intervals and maybe pickup some mileage increases. Just wondering which AMSOil synthetic is the type for our Cummins and where is a good place to buy it from?

They also make extended mileage interval oil filters as well right?

I'm new on the whole synthetic oil topic Always been old fashioned and ran Rotella...

www.DieselNutMotorsports.com is a good place to get your amsoil...

I'm making the switch in about 1000 miles and he's got everything in stock ready to ship, filter included. He's telling me I'll be able to run it 15k miles... which will be my plan.

Is shop is not too far from me and he seems to have a handle on the dodge diesels... he beats the crap out of his and it keeps on ticking... (he drags his truck)...

I just changed everything but the transfer over to AMSoil. mileage did go up a bit and my NV5600 manual shifts WAY better. I just called the people up and ordered my stuff and also joined their preferred customer program and got all fluids for a discount

the engine takes regular 15-40 diesel oil. the axels take 75-90 if you are not towing, alot of towing you will want to go to 75-140.

the donaldson filter they suggest is a good filter and advertizes a smaller particle filtering capability, however putting on a bypass filter will help exted drain cycles even farther. also if you do oil analysis you will get a report back of how your oil is performaing and when to change it.

Thanks for the info fellas. Probably try and make the switch at the next oil change which is coming up in about 2500 miles.

Drew, whats the bypass filter system you speak of? I've seen it written about a lot on this forum but never a description of what it was? Where can I get the system from? I have 2 Cummins dealers in my area if I need to get the stuff from there...

Also, as I was gazing at AMSOils site....there are several of the donaldson oil filters you are speaking of....ranging from fairly cheap to outrageously high! Which one is the one to purcharse? Is it better to just call them up and order the stuff than over the 'net?

here's a link to the bypass filter setups from amsoil... the bmk11 is what they recommend for the 600/610 motors...

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/bf.aspx

they are supposed to filter down to the 1 micron level keeping your oil ultra clean. you can extend the change interval by doing oil analysis on samples you take from your motor. there is an add-on piece that allows you to get samples easily.

I'm a little confused here ( what else is new ).

Are these oil filters replacements for your existing filter, or are they in addition to your existing filter?

they are in addition to your full flow filter. some of their kits have a replacement assembly that has the full flow filter included, the bmk11 however is just the bypass filter so your stock filter would stay and still need to be replaced periodicly

I dont have one but am considering one this oil change.

Hmmm, not sure if I'll drop the additional cash for the bypass system. How many miles can you go between oil change intervals with the bypass system and without? I imagine it depends on your driving and as of right now i'm stuck in college so my driving is going to be mostly city driving and highway driving....not much towing going on except when I drag my 17 foot enclosed trailer to motocross races which is only 1-2 times a month on average.

Drew can you answer as to which oil filter I'm suppose to buy or do you happen to know Steve?

drew would be the filter expert... I get the dodge filters which I think are re-labled fleetguard ones from cummins.

I'm told that with the amsoil oil & filter (from amsoil) I should be good for 15k oil change intervals. if you install the bypass setup, you do oil analysis and let that determine when to do an oil change. I've also read that if you have the bypass installed, your oil will stay visibly cleaner longer... (wont turn black in 500 miles).
