First of all i'm not sure what a barking turbo actually is, however i think it might be doing that. Everytime i rev it up and shift i get and awkward noise and a slight jolt. it sounds like the wastegate is lettin out more than normal. any ideas of whats going on?

 

also, if hats not turbo barking, could you explain what turbo barking is?

 

turbo bark is casued when the drive pressure(exhaust side) is less than manifold pressure(intake side) and the turbo's compressor, turbine, and shaft actualy start spinning backwards. this is EXTREEMLY hard on the turbo's shaft and bearings. I have seen turbo's that have been barked excessivly, not a pretty sight. This actualy happens more on automatics than manuals and mainly occurs when the transmission shifts to the next gear while building medium to high pressures.

I can get my turbo to bark at me and I have a 6spd. if I crank my TST higher than 7/7 and am running less than 20psi with my foot all over the throttle and get out of it she'll bark.

the turbo's on our engines are wastegated to 26#, I can still nail 35# easy under stock conditions.

If you have your edge box turned up I would say yes you are probably getting a little bark, however I'm also going to add in it could be the DMF and the clutch not likeing the added power.

DMF= Dual Mass Flywheel. this was added for the G56 to improve ride quality and to remove alot of the vibrations the Cummins produces undler load from being transmitted to the rest of the drive train.

 

Wouldn't a blow-off valve take care of that?

 

nope, a BOV only handles high pressure and wont prevent turbo bark. unless you can rig a way to have it pop when the drive pressure is less then intake pressure.

I can bark mine at only 12-15 psi with my TST cranked

mine did it often with the stock intake manifold, and the afe stage 2 installed... could almost do it at will. 2 things helped it alot, 1 being a change on the intake... went to an ATS manifold and for some reason it helped out alot. bark is minimized quite abit. actually now that I think about it, I've only heard it bark once since the ats intake install. the 2nd being using the stock airbox. I never had it bark with the stock box on which tells me that the more restrictive the intake, the less it is likely to bark. I asked Diesel Nut about this and he said with a valve body swap, i'll never get it. he doesnt.... but he's got the twins, maybe that has something to do with it.

I could see a way to get rid of turbo bark if there was some way to hook up a BOV to open when the drive pressure spinning the turbine goes below the intake pressure generated by the compressor wheel. this would help save some turbo's from barking into destruction.

 

or upgrade into a better turbo... what is it?? SPS62?

 

either that or the 64 would be a good one too. . .might not be that great for towing since it will surge on you a little
