I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the problem is with the dodge trannies. I would like to know which component in the tranny is the one that screws up and what some good ways to prevent it are or maybe what some good modifications to the tranny would help to keep the problem from happening

If your truck is stock and you leave it that way then you should not have any problems with it as long as you service it regularly. Now if you bomb your truck then I hear that the torque converter is one part that will go out when you add more HP and Torque.

How about on the manual tranny too. Obviously a clutch upgrade, any other concerns?

Well not the type of response you are looking for , BUT from the research that I have done on this subject ( and alot of help from this forum and it's great membership) I will do doing some mods to my tranny on my new 2007 5.9 48RE as follows.
First let me start by saying that I will be very close to max GVW of the truck and trailer combo of 21000lbs often so I will be upgrading to a deeper pan, a additional cooler with temp activated fan, and if I have any type of problem a torque converter. I already have the temp guage installed and will be watching it with one eye every time I tow.

Kingdog - I thought the '07 models had the bigger engine in it?

I had a 2000CTD auto, We hauled heavy every day 20,000 to 26,000lbs never spent a dime on it, Just dont nail it from a dead stop loaded or unloaded it will eat the torque converter up.Ease it off when loaded. the 04 6 speed I cant say enough good.Stick in and go. 24,000lbs gross 75-80 mph hilly 6th gear all the way home. 125miles. Trailer tires do get a little hot

You are 1/2 correct, the 2007's have the 5.9 and the 2007.5's ( Jan 1st and on) will have the 6.7 motor with the aison ( spelling ) tranny or the 6 speed manual.
This is why I got my 2007 in October 2006 to stay away from the newer motor and tranny combo .

Yea that was smart not getting the 6.7 the first year they come out cause they are going to have some sort of problem just like anything does the first year, but those allison trannies are the mack daddy of all trannies. My buddy has a duramax which has the allison in it and his is auto but when he lets off the gas it down shifts like you would wuth a manual. Not only does it help with slowing down but if you have exhaust it sounds really cool too. I heard that those 6.7's aren't going to have as much power as the 5.9's either. And I am pretty sure fuel mileage will be lower in them also.

the power will be more, but not much higher than what the 5.9's were pushing.

the 48re is a good tranny stock, add more than 75hp and you'll need at a minimum a new valvebody. 100hp you'll need a billet TC. much over that and you'll be looking at billet input and output shafts.

the manuals, clutch upgrade and your good to go. put in a double disk and you'll be needing high dollar engine upgrades to make that puppy slip.
