The cummins site actually have a bypass filtering system for our trucks but it is a cyclone type, check it out see what you think. I am not going to go with this option I am going to go with an actual filter media.

right from http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eabp.aspx?zo=500327

just some tech jargen for which trucks and filters

Soot Removal
AMSOIL has designed a new high-efficiency by-pass filter element that is also a soot removal device. AMSOIL Ea By-Pass Filters use a synthetic/cellulose sandwiched media. The inner layer of the element is composed of a highly efficient cellulose media covered with a full synthetic media outer layer. These filters remove 39 percent of soot contaminants less than one micron. Soot removal efficiency increases approximately 10 to 14 percent when the EaBP Filter is used in conjunction with a standard full-flow filter.

NOTES:
1. Special adapters and hardware may be required for some installations.
2. Contact AMSOIL INC. Technical Service for instructions before installing on vehicles with cast aluminum oil pans.

lesimon,

Who told you Cummins makes a direct fit oil by pass system that will fit into the Dodge trucks? When I talked to the Midwest regional dealers parts dept. in Des Monies, IA I was told they have them for every thing else but not for the Dodge pick-up trucks. As if they had one when I asked last fall I would of already had it on my truck, that way Dodge could not raised hell in anyway if it was a Cummins setup if I was to ever need warranty work done!

Steve has on on his truck doesn't he? I even think there's an installation link at the top of the page.

BTW: I change my oil every 5000 miles

Mayfair,

Yes I recall he has a Amsoil system on his truck. One reason I've held off is becasue Dodge has told my local Dodge SM last fall they are not sure if its OK to have one on our engines. I have to worry some as I have a 7/100 warranty and I don't want to screw it up in any way being I only have 14K on it.

just go get a new CAT to put in your trucks. CAT doesn't use egr's because they were afraid of all the crap they put into the engine. CAT was able to make emissions without an egr, they get the same power, if not more, and the same fuel mileage with less maintance cost.
From what cummins has told me, they won't warrenty an engine with an oil bypass system on it unless it is made by them.

If you want better filtering of your engine oil you could always install a bypass filter. Amsoil sells a few different models, and I think they even have an installation kit for Dodge Rams with the CTD. I'm not sure of the exact size in microns, but I know the bypass filter can remove particles much smaller than a regular full-flow filter.
One of my old marine Detroits had what I believe was called a color filter.
It was about the size of a 2gal can and it bleed a small amount of oil off of the pressure side of the pump through a small oriface then through the filter and back to the crankcase.

I pulled of the return line one tme with the engine running and was amazed clear amber colored oil was coming out when black oil was going in.

PS it was an ex US Navy engine and i believe that the filter was Navy spec. because the local Detroit dealer could not find it in their parts books.

Some one with Navy connections might be able tofind out what is was.

Google search Fleetguard Centriguard, Centrifugal Separator, CH41111 & CH41112. I hope that this helps get down to the facts good luck. This is Cummins version of an oil bypass filter. I also called a local Tractor trailer service department who faxed me the information. I live on Vancouver Island Canada. I am going to go with Racor LFS 801 bypass filter system mainly because it is readily available to me the filters that is. The FS 2500 was my first choice but because of the cost and availability I have opted for the Racor. I am going to run the bypass filter while under warranty but will remove it when I have the vehicle serviced, simply remove two monting bracket bolts and two hoses. I figure what they dont know wont hurt them.
