Hello, new to site and have a little bit of a problem..I have a 1981 Champion motor home with a Dodge 440 engine and trying to find out about a part that is bad, The part is a square box with a circut board sealed in was with the number H8D 508 and 3874129...I have been told that it has either a Catalytic Protect Switch, a power conduction switch, a emission speed switch and a emission control switch..What i need to know is waht the part is actually and if there is anything that is available to repalce it ..

Ah, it seems that your Ram Van is actually one of these years or somebody yanked a 440 engine and put it into a 1981 van.

According to Allpar documentation on the Ram Van, the 440 was used ...
"the big 400 and 440 cubic inch V8 engines were made optional; they would only be available for three scant years, 1977, 1978, and 1979" http://www.allpar.com/trucks/b-vans.html

As for your black box, start looking at a 1979 parts book.

It could be a EGR timer. That p/n is also listed at the end of a Van thread ... There is a diagram of sorts there too.

^ just so you know, Stev, coach manufacturers bought chassis in big lots and built coaches on them as requested. So an '81 with a 440 is not unknown. Even a class C, but this isn't necessarily a C. Many Champion Class A rv's came with 440s, like mine (mine's a Concord made by Champion).

Install a Remco driveshaft disconnect. It cost about $750 to buy, then there's installation cost if you can't do it yourself.

I tried the champion site listed below and it says the site does not exist?

 

My friend got a 1976 Dodge Champion real cheap.
it has the 440 motor.
it ran great and everything worked.
he has been driving it for almost a year.
Now all of a sudden it will die without warning.
The battery will also be dead.
He charged the battery then started it.
It ran a short distance and died again.
So he now has to jump start it but cant go more then a mile before it dies again.
He tried a few things.
He charged the battery then started the motorhome.
When he pulled the battery cable off, it died immediately.
If he starts it then turns the headlights on, it dies.
One parts place said it was the ballast resistor?
Another said battery isolator?
And another said voltage regulator?
he can't even find the voltage regulator.
Where would you look?
I have no answers for him.
He is poor from loosing his job due to covid and now lives in his motorhome.
he is desperate for answers.

 

It's not charging the battery/s, Not sure what kind of set up they used on motor homes. Maybe some pics would help.
