Default 43RE Transmission question

I have 2001, 3500 cargo ram van with a 5.9 and a 46RE transmission 170K that is begining to not want to go up in the gears after about 5-10 miniutes of driving.

Sticker under the hood for trans;

DGB trans-4 speed A
DGT Trans 4 speed Au
DHA Torque Convertor -Lock-

Last fluid change was about 6 months ago and fluid and magnet looked normal.

After reading some posts, I see that it is recomended to adjust the bands at fluid changes which I have never done.

I did the key dance and there was a "PdoNE" that flashed on the odometer.

I checked the relay by swapping out the relay for the AC which is the same part number with no different effect.

Before I take it somewhere, I am thinking of changing the fluid and filter and adjust the bands. Try and locate the trans solenoid that is under the hood near the batery and clean the contacts.

Any other suggestions

George

If you're saying the tranny has 170K miles on it and the bands have never been adjusted, then I think you can safely say you've solved you own problem.

I agree, I would also replace the governor solenoid and transducer too.

OK, I changed the fluid, adjusted the bands and replaced the governor solenoid and transducer too.

It has been a week and everything seems back to normal now.

Thanks all.

I have a new question.

This afternoon my check engine light came on and the code is P1740.

I searched this site and found the P1740 code may be "TCC or OD Solenoid Performance" issues.

Is there another solenoid for this also?

Up date,

Yesterday after driving 10 min. the trans temp light came on, the overdrive off light came on and brought it back home.

No cel.

I spent all afternoon today to replace the lock-up and overdrive solenoid. At best, time consuming job and where a lift would be a luxury.

The spring at the tv linkage was disconected and not sure for how long but it is back on.

Checked the big accumulator spring and it was not broken.

Replaced the filter, gasket and new atf 4.

When I took it for a 10-15 min. test drive, the reverse lights come on in park and reverse. Also the park indicator does not lite up in the dash, but the neutral, drive and rest do. The shift feels like it almost goes in, but it is in park.

Is this just the linkage needing adjustment???

It did go into park the 4-5 times I tried, but the first time it didn't.

If I damaged the Park Rod when the valve body was lowered, would it still engage?

After adjusting the tv cable, transmission linkage cable, the bands and the solenoids replaced, the transmission is back to shifting normal.

The only problem is the trans light comes on after 20-30 mins. after driveing.

Removed the presure line at the radiator and the trans fluid flows at about a quart in 15 seconds or so.

Both trans line at the transmission are hot but at the radiator they are both cool.

I did get two codes 1391 and 1740 yesterday. I pulled into a driveway to turn a round and when backing up, I felt a miss. When I shifted into D the cel light came on. Not sure, but may be another issue.

So I am trying to figure out why the "Trans Light" keeps coming on.

I am going to change the fluid again to check the condition.
