Adjust 'em up on jack stands, pump the pedal a few times, then back up, and STAB the brakes a few times as well. (thats how the self adjusters are supposed to work.)

I adjusted till I felt a faint drag at the wheels, started it up and pumped the pedal a dozen times. About 3 and a half above the floor I had firm brake. I then hammered on the pedal in reverse with both feet a few times, the brakes felt way better. Then, I took it for a short drive and made a few stops. I had good firm brake after pressing the pedal down about an inch each time. So should I consider it fixed? Or maybe give it another couple notches on the adjusters?

Leave the adjusters alone at this point. It it possible to get the brakes TOO tight, and that's not a good scene either. Could try doing the reverse trick another time or three, and see what happens. So far as I know, that method won't overtighten the brakes.

I'm just gonna leave it be, having firm brake after only an inch of pressing down travel is like it was before

That sounds like a good plan.

You have to have a little travel for the brakes to release. Sounds like you have good pedal.
