That's a common failure. Parts of a snap-ring that holds part of the O/D together..... Not sure how critical it is..... as long as some of it is there...... I would have a chat with trans shop, and see if they will replace just that part, as opposed to a complete rebuild... Either that, or just get a used trans to throw in there.

Yeah, I'm going to call a trans shop in the morning. I cleaned up the pan and put it back on, I'll have it towed to the shop since I have AAA. The weirdest part is that the pieces are within a millimeter of being the same length.
just had mine redone - last week
$2500 - totally rebuilt with upgrades and new TC
46RE- though I got a pretty good deal
That is a screaming deal. I haven't even found a rebuilt trans for that cheap.
My van goes into the shop tomorrow morning. I explained the issue to the guy and he's familiar with the issue and the 600lbs spring, and how not to get your head taken off when pulling it apart. So I'm hopeful, but we shall see, it could still be worse.
If that black goo is what was in the trans pan then I would think you have more problems than that snap ring.
That is what was around the magnet, which is to be expected. The fluid was definitely not changed frequently though, yes it was black, but no it wasn't goo.
When I'm pulled the pan off, the bolts were mostly just finger tight, and it made a huge mess with the leak. 🤦
It turned out not to be the overdrive spring clip, and it is a good thing I took it into the shop as soon as I found the issue, The remaining pieces of that clip were the only thing holding the valve body in place. The cooler was also leaking badly, so they replaced that as well.
The valve body is held in with bolts so I don't know why they told you that. Those pieces are from a circlip or spring clip and are used through out an automatic transmission in drums and such, hence the round shape. Glad you got her up and running agin and things didn't let go real bad and been more costly.
