Default bad fuel or fuel pump?

hi, i have a '95 ram 4x2 318 cid. i just got it a month ago and for the second time , i was stranded along side the road. it idles and runs great, but at about a quater tank, it loses all power to go anywhere. it ll start but as you step on the gas, it backfires and cuts out. after sitting for about a half hour or so, it fires up like nothing ever happened. i put injecter cleaner, dry gas in it. i just dont want to throw a weekend and 300 bucks away towards a new pump if you guys have any clues.btw, it has 84,000 mi and runs like new otherwise. thanks duane

I have the EXACT problem with my 95 1500 pickup. Happened in Oct.03 and again Thanksgiving day and the previous saturday. Have you fixed your problem yet? My truck is in shop now, but mechanic is at a loss, as it is running fine right now. Please respond as to the outcome of your situation. Thanks

Default bad fuel or fuel pump?

I had the same problem too. Get down to a 1/4 tank (about 40 DTE on the computer)and i get scared. When mine acted up, it acts like there is water in the tank and doesnt go. When i put gas in it (filled it up), got 24 outta 26 gallons in there...hmmm....... Two days in a row i ran out. Knowing that my local friendly dodge dealer are a bunch of jerks, i just keep it above 1/4 and around 3/4 full.

Somethinge that have helped me:
Fuel additiive. It helped, havent ran out yet.
To lazy to get a new fuel fliter yet.

peace

Hey I have a 95 Ram that does the same thing at a 1/4 tank of gas. You get down to a quarter tank of gas and it starts running like crap. Has anyone solved the problem yet? Maybe fuel filter, pressure regulator, filter? I need help here.

-thanks
Dave

Default RE: bad fuel or fuel pump?

I am so new to this truck but from what I gather the fuel filter is actually in the tank (like on my neon). So that really is not a quick and easy thing to do like on many other cars and trucks out there. I would like to see if the mechanics here have seen a "pickup screen" or filter on the pump looked very clogged when/if they have changed out a pump. By kicking the tank it leads me to think that maybe it moves some debris away from the screen and the pump is then able to get more gas. I picture it like a dirty sink drain, if you take your finger and move the debris off the screen the water level goes down. As far as it running better on a full tank maybe its because there is more "pressure" on the screen to let more fuel go to the pump.
Just trying to throw out some ideas to help.....

The problem is the fuel sending unit. We had HUGE problems with the senders from 1994 to about 1999. Same problem everytime, at 1/4 tank it quits. Its because it's actually out of gas. If you just add a couple gallons it will run fine again.

Is the problem with the suel sending units related to a particular tank size. I believe there are 3 sizes of tanks? I know I have a 35 gal tank (99 ram longbed). Do these tanks utilize the same pump and sending unit?
