1995 dodge stratus 2.4 16 v timing
hi looking for any advise
just did a timing belt and water pump
on removing the cam sprockets i marked them but when i went to remove it just spun over
I thought i moved them back ,but unsure ?
when they cam off they were moved ,
I was thinking now that there on with the notches matching up
that it should be good ,
I guess the question here is
is it possible to have one sprocket turned more than the other one
and still have the notches match up
if this is the case , i should be able to see with removing the valve cover ?
and see
also #1 cylinder should be tdc ? how to determine this with the front valve cover off
thanks

Yes. You may need to advance the exhaust cam by more than one tooth before you put the belt on. Make sure your set top dead center and when your done spin the engine twice via the crankshaft and see where your marks line up. If your still off, try advancing one more tooth. Let us know....
hey that worked and after turning 2 x it was still in the same spot
now i have a new concern before i put it back together
on the tensioner when re installing i put it in a vice and put a pin to hold it
when i bolted it back up i had to use a pry bar so that it looked to be in the spot it was before and onec that was tight i tightened the wheel to40pds
now when i pulled the pin out it is half on the round part where the pin comes out , i heard the pin hit when i pulled it out
but it does not look right
on the wheel part of the tensioner where is the pin and the diameter of the pin supposed to be sitting
I just dont want to re do
thanks

Hey I hear you, you don't want to redo. I did that at least twenty times before I got it rite! Lol What a pain it is to get that belt on! The way I did it was I used a breaker bar on the crankshaft nut to keep it from spinning. I locked the two cams with with two wrenches in a x pattern and a vice grip in the middle of them to keep them both from spinning. Then I leaned over the front of the car and with my left hand reached in and used allen wrench inserted into the tensioner to pull back the tension on the tensioner and wit my rite hand threw the remaining piece of the belt that I had already channeled, over the exhaust sprocket.
Is the belt hanging off the tensioner or the sprockets?
Can you put an allen wrench in it and pull back on the tension and reseat the belt? let us know...

When install a new timing belt and the pro's have the same problem. You may not hear from them. Always have the tensioner installed with the pin installed, and do not rotate the crankshaft backwards. Once the cams and crankshaft are lined up. Pull the pin and rotate the engine one full turn by hand. If any you guys need a picture of how the timing belt is setted up, send me a pm with your email. I do have the timing set ups for all timing belts ans chains.
when I put the tessioner on I put the wheel on first and it was a pain
with the belt , i used a pry bar and fitting the pry bar in there in the right
way to have the right leverage took a few attempts at first it did not seem
it was going to work but i got it with the belt just enough to get the bolt started , now for the spring loaded part with the pin still in I got the bottom bolt on and then used a pry bar to put the top bolt in ,
then I had to use the pry bar again to get it were it needs to be and then tighten it all while holding the wheel tension part pulling it back , the part or block that is attached to the wheel part , holding that all the way back then when the spring loaded tensioner part was fully tightened I tightened the wheel part
everything lines up and the belt comes out to the same place after turning 2x .
when looking at it thou the tensioner part with the pin
it looks as the perimeter around the pin the lip only on the right of it where the pin comes out is hitting against the wheel part
is it possible to pull that wheel too far back ?
thanks

a note on the allen key slot
when I had the wheel off there were no holes for an allen key
I looked and did not see one
i did how ever see that in the manual

I wonder if your setup was like mine. I couldn't really get a crow bar in there. I essentially got tired of taking out the tensioner and putting the pin back in. My problem was that after I released tension on the belt, it would not want to sit on the camsprockets correctly. I later realized that I had torqued the the tensioner to tight. Also for me the pin hole was the allen key hole and when you stuck an allen wrench in it and puIled back on her, it would release tension. So after a bad install on the belt on my part I would stick an allen wrench in there, pull it back and remove the belt and start again! Pain full memories with loud cursing this is what I remember and lots of crying to mommy! LOL!! I would definitely ask Master tech for those pics on timing set up. Anything to make that job simpler.
hey how are
I was wondering when you get a chance
can you send pics of the tensioner after it is installed
I just want
to be sure that the spring loaded tesioner is sitting
correctly
i have the belt on and that is sitting good all in the grooves
and when I turned it 2x it lined up with the marks
i already put the bottom cover on
but just a couple of bolts to pull back the cover to see
thanks for your time
and everyone's help here is greatly appreciated
